Chris Rock took a brief break from presenting the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature to crack a few jokes live on stage. The comedian cracked a joke about Jada Smith, saying, “Jada, I love ya G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.” This was in reference to the lead character in the 1997 film, G.I. Jane, who also sported a shaved head.

Why Has Chris Rock Not Slapped Him Back? 

Chris Rock ‌addressed the Oscars slap and claimed he “wasn’t a victim” during a Netflix stand-up show, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage (released on 4 March 2023). 

Rock did, however, use his encounter with Will Smith to help him shape and breathe new life into his Netflix stand-up special. He claimed that he refrained from taking physical offense at the Oscars because “I got parents.”

On the other hand, Will Smith allegedly “tried unsuccessfully” to make up with Chris Rock over the past year.

Smith even published a video apology in July of last year to address his behavior. “I’ve reached out to Chris [Rock] and the message that came back is he’s not ready to talk, and when he is, he will reach out.” 

In his final remarks, Rock claimed that the Emancipation actor was just a victim of his marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith, who was caught in the middle of everything. 

While this was going on, Jada Pinkett Smith gave a cryptic response to her husband, Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. “This is the season for healing And I’m here for it,” she wrote in a post to her Instagram account.

For the unversed, the Academy has since condemned Smith’s actions, and a formal review into the incident has taken place.
