“We can’t be friends”: Matthew Perry Regretted Asking Out Jennifer Aniston Before They Were Cast in FRIENDS

Late actor Matthew Perry and his pal and co-star Jennifer Aniston played their iconic characters as Chandler Bing and Rachel Green, but the actor knew the actress even before they were cast in FRIENDS. The Serving Sara actor had a huge crush on Aniston during the initial years of their ally. Matthew Perry in his memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing mentioned:
“I got the sense she was intrigued, too—maybe it was going to be something.”
The 17 Again actor explained his feelings for the Wanderlust actress who eventually turned him down. Perry mentioned that he was rejected by Aniston after he asked her out and this was the moment that the actor regretted as he was left with a broken heart. He wrote:
“I only compounded the error by then asking her out, [Jennifer] declined (which made it very difficult to actually go out with her), but said that she’d love to be friends with me, and I compounded the compound by blurting, ‘We can’t be friends!”
Matthew Perry revealed that Jennifer Aniston suggested being good friends which the actor didn’t expect and refused to be friends with the actress after getting dismissed by her. But ironically they became friends on the sets of FRIENDS! Since then the Horrible Bosses actress and The Whole 10 Yards star endured an incredible camaraderie.

The late actor has been quite open about drug addiction and alcoholism which almost ended his career. However, Matthew Perry didn’t let these struggles dictate his life. According to ET, the Birds of America star revealed that he cherished FRIENDS and its cast a lot that he can’t even express enough. Perry shared:
“Early on yes, and I made a rule that I would never drink or take anything at work, so I would never do that, but I would show up blindly hungover. Like shaking.”
Matthew Perry disclosed that he made a rule of not letting alcoholism or drug addiction take over his show which might have led him toward taking those to the sets. But determined for his friends and especially for his character as Chandler Bing who gifted him a huge fanbase, Perry added:
“I loved Chandler, I loved the show. And I knew ‘Remember this because it’s going to be the best time of your life.’ And I knew I would never forgive myself if I messed this up.”
Matthew Perry wrote about his struggles while coping with drug addiction and alcoholism and even acknowledged Jennifer Aniston for her support while her co-star was fighting to get rid of the mess that would have ended his life.
