SUMMARY
  • The death of Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron left his position vacant in the franchise.
  • Evan Peters, who's supposedly Quicksilver in WandaVision, is in talks to play the character in earnest this time.
  • Peters' might not be the best fit for replacing Aaron Taylor-Johnson for quite a few reasons.

Bringing back characters from the dead is something that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become capable of with the introduction of the multiverse. Evan Peters’ Quicksilver was one such character that the franchise almost brought back in the show WandaVision, but then revealed to be a trap set up by the antagonist, Agatha Harkness.

Now there is a Quicksilver-shaped hole in the franchise that needs to be filled in Avengers: Secret Wars. Since Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s version of the character is dead and is portraying Kraven the Hunter in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, he has to be replaced. Rumor has it that Peters is in talks with the studio to reprise the role, but we don’t believe that will work out, and for good reason.

Evan Peters made his film debut in 2004 with the titular role of Adam Sheppard in Clipping Adam, which earned him the award for Best Breakthrough Performance at the Phoenix Film Festival. He gained more popularity with his role in the FX anthology series American Horror Story. A decade later, his fame saw new heights when he was cast as Peter Maximoff, inspired by Marvel’s Quicksilver, in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Peters reprised the role in the sequels, X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix. After Marvel regained the rights to the X-Men, he made a surprise appearance in WandaVision. His character was supposedly Quicksilver, who later turned out to be Ralph Bohner, an ordinary resident of Westview controlled by Agatha Harkness.

Now, Marvel Updates on X has reported that the Dahmer star had a meeting with Marvel Studios in which they discussed his return as Quicksilver. While most fans are beyond happy with this news, some want Aaron Taylor-Johnson back. Here is what some of them had to say:

Bringing back Taylor-Johnson is not something that Marvel is not capable of even if he plays Kraven the Hunter in SSU. They can introduce his version of Quicksilver as one from a different universe rather than the one where Wanda lost him. Either way, Peters does not seem to be the right fit for this role in the MCU.

Why Does Evan Peters’ Quicksilver Not Fit the Bill?

In the MCU, Pietro Maximoff (Quicksilver) and Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) are siblings. Wanda lost her brother during the climactic battle in the fictional Eastern European city of Sokovia in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. His death had a huge impact on his sister who struggled with it emotionally and that is exactly what Agatha used to trick her.

Taylor-Johnson’s portrayal of Quicksilver has a serious tone unlike Peters’ who had a more humorous and carefree approach to the character. The former had a tragic backstory tied to his Eastern European heritage which made him more serious and emotionally driven. Wanda had a strong emotional bond with Pietro which she lacks with this new version of the character.

During an interview with IGN, WandaVision series writer Jac Schaeffer and series director Matt Shakman put forth the reasons behind introducing Peters as Quicksilver before revealing his true identity. They insisted that it was a meta-level of casting meant to show Wanda’s mental and emotional state and not some kind of prank that they wished to pull on fans. They also asserted that Peters is not Quicksilver at all.
