“We knew he was superstar”: Cobra Kai Creator Breaks Silence on Xolo Maridueña Joining DCU Ahead of Karate Kid Spin-off Final Season
Xolo Mariduena debuted as the first canon character of James Gunn’s DC reboot Blue Beetle. The film has become an important project in terms of representation as it is the first Latin-led film in the mainstream media. After the movie’s release this Friday, Mariduena has emerged as a star on the rise.
Even though it feels like Mariduena’s breakthrough, it isn’t. The actor has been a familiar face on the screen, starring in the Karate Kid spinoff series Cobra Kai as Miguel Diaz. On his DC debut, he must have received congratulatory messages and well wishes from his past colleagues and friends. One person, in particular, took it out of the DMs and went on to the X app to congratulate the star.
Jon Hurwitz Congratulates Xolo Mariduena
Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz took to Twitter/X to congratulate Mariduena. The actor started featuring in the Karate Kid spin-off series at the age of sixteen. He grew up on the set. The creators saw him become who he is now and translated the same emotions into the heartwarming post.
Even though Blue Beetle‘s position at the box office is a little shaky right now, Mariduena’s acting skills are applauded.
The actor plays Miguel Diax on the show who is a martial arts prodigy with a complex background. It can be said that Mariduena’s training for the superhero started during his Cobra Kai years. As Hurwitz said in his tweet:
We knew @Xolo_Mariduena was a superstar when we saw his first audition for Cobra Kai. It has been amazing having a front row seat to his growth over the last half decade. He’s as fine a young man as he is an actor. So excited for the world to watch him take off as Blue Beetle… https://t.co/hCEezBKvXC

Xolo Mariduena: A Star on the Rise
Starting his career as a catalog model, Mariduena landed Cobra Kai in his early teens. The show is his only previous acting experience before landing Blue Beetle. Getting to lead such an important film from a representation point of view has made Mariduena an icon in the Latin community.
Getting a DC film with the short vitae Mariduena has is a big deal. He also co-hosts a podcast Jacob Bertrand called Lone Lobos. People love a versatile man.
The actor is proud to be a representative of the Latin community, he has said for the film:
“The only thing that is on my mind right now is just the fact that he’s Latino. I have so much pride in getting to be a part of this project… I think it’s so important, and I don’t want to stand on the soapbox for too long but representation is so important.”
The box office performance of the film is breaking all records of negative reception but no matter what the fate of Blue Beetle is Xolo Mariduena is the star to watch out for.
Blue Beetle is now available in theatres near and far.
