SUMMARY
  • Ruby Rose exited Batwoman after one season due to toxicity at the workplace.
  • She was ill-treated by the showrunners who threatened to write her off if she didn't return to film the show despite heavy injuries.
  • She was eventually written off and replaced by Ryan Wilder.

Premiering in 2019, Batwoman ran for three seasons. It showed a different perspective of the story where Kate Kane, played by Ruby Rose, is Batwoman instead of Bruce Wayne as we have seen in most projects. At the center of the narrative, Kane takes charge as Batwoman to protect Gotham City from all the evils of the world.

Based on the comic book Batwoman by Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, and Keith Giffen, the series reimagined the world fans know so dearly and spun a great story. However, off-screen, there were some issues that led to Rose exiting the show just after one season.

While there are many reasons that make an actor want to move on from a show, there are seldom causes that are scandalous enough to make the entire show come under the spotlight. That’s what happened with Ruby Rose when she starred as the lead in Batwoman. The show was indeed a launchpad for her career since it was one of the first few roles that put her on the map after being seen in Orange is the New Black.

She took to Instagram to tell the world what went on behind the scenes. Rose blamed the showrunners including The CW creator Caroline Dries, executive producer Sarah Schechter, and executive producer Greg Berlanti. Rose revealed,

I’m going to tell the whole world what really happened on that set. I will come for you so that what happened to me never happens to another person again. And so I can finally take back my life and the truth. Shame on you.

Rose claimed that the workplace was toxic and harmful to her health as she sustained multiple injuries while filming Batwoman. She was made to return to film the show despite having fatal spinal surgery. Rose further accused her co-star of yelling and hurting female stunt double on sets, making the entire environment unfathomable.

How did Warner Bros react to the claims?

The studio was quick to shut down the claims and speculations even though Rose put forth her experience very clearly in her social media posts. The statement was sent out to Cosmopolitan when they first ran the story and it read,

Despite the revisionist history that Ruby Rose is now sharing online aimed at the producers, the cast and crew, the network, and the Studio, the truth is that Warner Bros. Television had decided not to exercise its option to engage Ruby for season 2 of Batwoman based on multiple complaints about workplace behavior that were extensively reviewed and handled privately out of respect for all concerned.

They chose to not shed any light on the allegations of toxicity at the workplace leveled by Rose and the entire reply was vague at best. The show continued after Rose left and ran till 2022.

Ruby Rose faced backlash after being cast in Batwoman

Rose’s troubles began long before she started filming for the DC show. She faced quite a heavy backlash for being cast as Batwoman despite being Jewish and gender-fluid. Fans did not like the fact that she was chosen over other candidates who were being considered for the lead. The actress handled the situation professionally and chose to move forward believing fans will come around once they see her talent.

However, what happened on the sets of the show was completely unimaginable for the actress which forced her to depart from the show altogether. Rather than replacing the actress, the showrunners decided to write her character off the show and introduce Ryan Wilder instead.
