“We’re punishing her for growing up”: Dolly Parton Frustrated With Critics Desperately trying to Ruin Miley Cyrus’ Reputation
Miley Cyrus has been an influential personality ever since she was a young girl. Starting her career as a Disney kid, starring in Hannah Montana, the singer made her way into the entertainment industry. However, just like every other Disney child actor, even Cyrus tried hard to break free from the image that Disney created of her. In an attempt to do so, the Flowers singer was slammed hard by the media.
Dolly Parton, godmother to the globally acclaimed singer, expressed her frustration over the media trying to bully Miley Cyrus. Parton shared her opinions on why the media and netizens are hellbent on slamming the Wrecking Ball singer and dragging her down from her fame.
Dolly Parton Calls Out Critics For Defaming Miley Cyrus
Dolly Parton, godmother to Miley Cyrus, has been silently noticing the hate and disrespect that is being thrown at the Malibu singer. Ever since Cyrus left Disney and tried making it on her own, people have been hellbent on bringing her down. However, the super-talented hitmaker keeps going and rising high in her career.
After staying shut for years, Parton finally expressed her opinion on why people are trying to “punish” the Hannah Montana actress. Calling the singer “little friend Miley Cyrus” in a 2011 interview with The Guardian, Dolly Parton defended the FU singer. Comparing Cyrus to another child actress, Parton stated, “We’re punishing her for growing up, just like we did to Shirley Temple.”
Parton believes the negative attention that is being thrown at Miley Cyrus is all because of the singer trying to break free from her Disney cultivated façade. Ever since Cyrus decided to leave behind the Disney image of Hannah Montana and be a version of her own, people have shaded her real persona.
The Godmother – Goddaughter Relationship Between the Two Singers
Dolly Parton has known the Mother’s Daughter singer since her birth. Miley Cyrus’ father, Billy Ray Cyrus was friends with Parton, and therefore, he asked her to be Cyrus’ godmother. In 2009, Dolly Parton shared with ABC,
“I’m her honorary godmother. I’ve known her since she was a baby. Her father is a friend of mine. And when she was born, he said, ‘You just have to be her godmother,’ and I said, ‘I accept.’”
Although they didn’t have a big ceremony to declare the godmother of Miley Cyrus, Parton still mentioned, “We never did do a big ceremony, but I’m so proud of her, love her, and she’s just like one of my own.” The relationship between Parton and Cyrus goes beyond blood, as the two have been not only close but also quite supportive of each other.
When Parton was acclaimed among the 100 Most Influential People of 2021 by TIME magazine, Cyrus took out her time to express her feelings for her godmother. Miley Cyrus wrote a heartfelt essay, saying,
“There’s a theory that you shouldn’t meet your heroes, but I wish everyone had the chance to meet Dolly Parton because she’s even better than your sparkliest dreams.”
Despite being Cyrus’ godmother and having a successful career in the industry, Dolly Parton mentioned, she never questions or advises Cyrus until asked for. “I would never dream of calling her and saying, ‘Well why are you doing this?’ or, ‘You shouldn’t do this or that.’” Realizing the price of being young, Parton stated, “It’s not easy being young. You’ve almost got to sacrifice your d*mn soul just to get anything done.”
After expressing her frustration towards the critics who have been diming Miley Cyrus’ shine, Dolly Parton mentioned how she simply supports the singer and lets her explore on her own.
