In the twilight of the DC Extended Universe franchise, the movie Shazam! Fury Of The Gods cast a shadow on its legacy, serving as a nadir in the franchise’s history. With a meager global box office earnings of just over $132 million, the movie claimed the title of the lowest-grossing film in the entire saga, giving critics a chance to give negative reviews. But this does not mean the movie was not worth watching, it was and its main cast Zachary Levi spoke about it openly.
While speaking with The FilmUp Podcast, Levi recalled his experience and reviews for the first part which was amazing, and then tells how he felt receiving the reviews for the second part calling it “insanely unkind”.
“But listen, as an experience, I really enjoyed making that movie and I really enjoyed playing that part. I don’t know what the future holds for it all because, unfortunately, the second movie was not as well-received. I mean, the audience score is still quite good, but the critic score was, I don’t know, very oddly and perplexingly low and people were insanely unkind.”
“I’ve been a part of things, and, as much as I wish that they were good, I know that they’re ok, I know that they missed a lot. And I’m not saying that ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ is some perfect Orson Welles masterpiece, it’s a good darn movie. When I watched it, normally I’m super self-conscious, and I still am, I’ll watch something and I’m like ‘Zach, your posture is horrible,’ and I can’t stop picking myself apart. And I remember watching the first screening that I saw of ‘Fury of the Gods’ and I was like ‘We made a really fun movie!’”
Zevi said while explaining that he understands that the movie isn’t perfect but it was fun.
Will Shazam Rise Once More In The New DCU?
In an interview with The Direct Marta Milans known for her role as Rosa Vásquez in Shazam 2 went into detail describing how “there is a lot more to explore” with the “Shazamily.”
“Listen, I think the future of the Shazamily is not written. I think there is a lot more to explore. I personally would love to see Billy having a smoothie or a chocolate milkshake with Batman, and then Mama Rosa showing up and being like, ‘Hey, you guys, do you mind if I take the Batmobile for a spin? I just want to just check the tires.’ … So yeah, something warm and funny, which is part of what makes us stand out in a different way.”
Amidst the transformation of the DC Universe by visionary co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, the fate of Zachary Levi’s return as Shazam remains an enigmatic question mark. As the new slate of movies reshapes the landscape, fans eagerly await news on whether the lightning will strike again for our hero. Only time will reveal.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now available to stream on Max.
