“We’ve seen his origin enough in film”: James Gunn Ignores One Crucial Part From His Henry Cavill Less Superman Movie
As new co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran attempt to change how the audience is told Superman’s origin story. This left fans all over the world disappointed after it was announced that Henry Cavill will no longer reprise his character of Superman in the upcoming movie.
But after hearing the director speak, it became obvious that they intended to launch their own DC Universe, ending the DCEU. Superman: Legacy is the first film in their DC Universe, and Gunn said he’s excited to buck the current Superman movie trend. Fans are likely to get on board with the new vision, especially because they would like to see what Gunn’s direction could do.
James Gunn shares that Superman: Legacy is not an origin story
During an interview in March, it was reported that the new co-CEO James Gunn is not only writing but is also going to direct the first project of the DC Universe; Superman: Legacy. The official synopsis of the movie was shared by Warner Bros. soon, mentioning that the movie is going to revolve around Kal-El’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.
Gunn said at the time that the movie is going to push Clark Kent’s heritage to the forefront and focus on Superman’s heritage. He added,
“Then a bit less than a year ago, I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”
However, there were no signs from the studios, and the director mentioned that the story that is going to start the DC Universe revolves around the origin story of the character, which is something similar to what the audience witnessed in Man of Steel with Henry Cavill as the lead. Gunn, via his Bluesky Social, confirmed that the 2025 movie is not an origin story of the character and they will be breaking one long-followed tradition of the Superman movies, which is to have a younger version of him appear in the movie via flashbacks.
He wrote, “I think we’ve seen his origin enough in film at this time!” Replying to a comment on his social media, the director added, “There is no Young Clark in Superman: Legacy”. Actor David Corenswet was recently announced as the new Superman of the DC Universe, replacing fan favorite Henry Cavill.
Why is breaking a Superman movie trend the right thing to do for James Gunn?
As much as fans were expecting a younger version of Superman to appear in Superman: Legacy, some of them believe that breaking a movie tradition and not making the upcoming movie as Clark Kent’s origin story was a smart decision by the director.
Ardent fans, who have dug deep into the statements by the director, have embraced the fact that he is trying to bring the character back to his more hopeful roots after the DCEU’s controversial take with Man of Steel. The movie would rather follow Corenswet’s Superman a few years into his superhero career.
One surprising thing that fans also noted was how James Gunn shared a random image of Superman from the Fleischer cartoon which fans now believe could be the inspiration suit for Cornswet’s Kal-El wear. It cannot be ignored that Gunn has mentioned previously that people should not take his posts online as a tease or clue, but fans believe that Superman needs a fresh start on-screen and this suit could be the first step.

James Gunn hints DC Studios to skip SDCC
In another surprising chain of events, the director has indicated that there is a possibility of DC Studios skipping this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, as the head of the studios is challenged by the management and labor sides of the divide, as the Writers Guild of America strike continues.
It was, however, reported that the director-writer had already turned in the script for Superman: Legacy a week before the strike started and was focusing on the other parts of development for the movie. He replied to a fan on social media “I won’t be there this year but probably next” under a post where he thanked his team for the success of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Warner Bros. has not made DC Studios’ absence from the SDCC clear to fans in any official announcement. This year, Netflix, Universal, HBO, and Sony Pictures have also decided to forego attending Comic Con. The majority of celebrities who promote bigger projects have opted not to get involved in any studio-backed productions because they are worried about violating the strike’s restrictions. Gunn, who is also a writer, is aware of that and likely made the right decision to skip the event.
The San Diego Comic-Con will take place from July 20 until July 23, 2023.
