“What an AWFUL woman”: Virgin River’s Prequel Series Is Under Threat After Season 6’s Foolish Portrayal of 1 Grossly Enraging Storyline
- Virgin River Season 6 gives the viewers a glimpse at the love story of Mel's parents.
- The flashbacks reveal things about Sarah and Everett that fans are not very impressed with.
- The prequel series might not work too well with the fans considering their displeasure with this storyline.
Virgin River is nothing if not drama, but not all of it is good drama. The new season of the show that dropped earlier this month brings back its signature flashbacks. They give a glimpse of Mel’s parents, Sarah and Everett’s love story.
Since the release of Season 5, rumors have swirled that a prequel spinoff series will be made that will tell Everett and Sarah’s love story. However, after the release of Season 6, fans are a bit skeptical about whatever is being planned for the prequel show considering that Sarah and Everett’s story is far from a usual love story.
Fans are not very happy with Sarah and Everett’s storyline in Virgin River
Virgin River is Netflix’s longest running original series and was renewed for a seventh season before the premiere of the sixth. The fifth season left fans with a lot of questions about the relationship between the protagonist Mel’s father, Everett and her late mother, Sarah.
In Season 5, Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) finally reunites with her biological father, but it was not until Season 6 that fans learned the truth about Everett and Sarah. The duo first had a meet-cute in the 1970s as revealed in Episode 2. As it turns out, they also fell in love in the town of Virgin River, where they had to camp after Everett’s VW bus broke down.
They parted ways that night, but Sarah promised that fate would bring them together again. While fate did what it had to by bringing them together, it did so in questionable circumstances. Sarah reconnected with Everett after she and her husband had a still born daughter named Chloe. It was during this affair with Everett that Sarah conceived Mel.
Sarah returns back home to her husband and informed Everett about her pregnancy, but did not give him the chance to become a part of his daughter’s life. So, their love story’s starting point is laid by cheating and betrayal to Sarah’s husband. This obviously does not work well with the audience. A Redditor even called Sarah “an AWFUL woman”.
What makes this matter even worse is the fact that this twist was not there in the eponymous books by Robyn Carr. This storyline hurts the chances of a possible spinoff series based on Everett and Sarah alone because fans do not seem too interested in learning about a love affair that glorifies themes like infidelity.
A prequel based on Sarah and Everett’s love story is already in the works
While John Allen Nelson plays the older version role of Everett, the younger version is played by Callum Kerr. The role of Sarah is played by Jessica Rothe in the flashbacks. Although the flashbacks do tell the audience what actually happened between Sarah and Everett all those years ago, there is a prequel series has already been in the making for months, according to Deadline.
In a conversation with Swooon, Kerr and Rothe expressed their interest in starring in the prequel series while discussing their characters and the relationship between them. Both actors also have potential story ideas should the prequel happen.
Additionally, showrunner Patrick Smith told Swooon in a different interview that there will be more flashbacks featuring Sarah and Everett in the next season. However, judging by the fans’ reactions, it is hard to tell whether or not this is a good idea considering the problematic nature of this storyline.
