Keanu Reeves felt John Wick 3 ending disappointed fans
Keanu Reeves, starring in the titular role of the John Wick franchise, has a huge fan base. The franchise kickstarted in 2014 and has produced four films till now. The latest installment was released earlier this year. The third part in the action thriller franchise, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, was a huge success at the box office.
The third part is considered one of Reeves’ greatest successes, but director Chad Stahelski admitted the actor couldn’t help but feel he had let everyone down with the ending. During his conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Stahelski revealed the 59-year-old wasn’t pleased with how the action movie came out. The director felt Chapter 4 was necessary due to the final stretch, leaving people wanting more. He said,
“We did the third movie and then we were really done. We’re like, ‘We’re done.’ And then again, it was a year later, Keanu [Reeves] and I both felt like we kind of let everybody down with the ending of number 3.”
The filmmaker noted reviews of Chapter 3 – Parabellum from fans were positive but not conclusive. He added,
“I think [the ending] was well-received but it was kind of like, people really like John and they’re like, ‘What the fuck, guys? You know, that was an action ending, great. But okay, what the fuck? Tough talking mythology here and you didn’t really wrap it up. And we started talking more and more, and we just felt like we didn’t leave everything we had on the table.”
John Wick 3 earned over $327 million on a $75 million budget, helping the John Wick film series reach new heights. It was supposed to be the final film in Keanu Reeves’ famous franchise, however, the cliffhanger ending led to the making of another chapter.
How John Wick 3 lead to the making of Chapter 4
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum was a critical and commercial success at the box office. The threequel saw Keanu Reeves return in the lead role as the film’s titular figure, who this time finds himself escaping a horde of hitmen after a $14 million bounty is set on his life.
In a surprising storyline twist that occurs in the closing scenes of John Wick 3, the title character is betrayed by Winston (Ian McShane). Wick is ultimately shot dead by Winston several times before he jumps off the hotel roof. Wick, for whatever reason, manages to survive this attack. The Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) takes him in, and ultimately, the film closes on a cliffhanger with Wick pledging to exact revenge on the High Table.
The third installment was supposed to be the final film in the franchise. However, with the twisted ending, director Chad Stahelski thought of adding one more film to the franchise. Chapter 4 saw Wick fighting for his freedom from the High Table across the world before seemingly meeting his demise at the end.
With a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and nearly $432 million in box office revenue, Chapter 4 was the biggest critical and financial triumph of the whole film series.
