The Old Harley was Solely Dependant on Joker.

Warner Bros. brought the Suicide Squad to the big screen in 2016, and besides that, introducing the first cinematic version of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and a brand new Joker (Jared Leto). Suicide Squad followed a team of scoundrels selected by Amanda Waller to achieve deadly black ops missions. The group referred to as Task Force X was formed by Harley Quinn, Deadshot (Will Smith), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Slipknot (Adam Beach). Meanwhile, the Joker was engaged in his plans.

Birds of Prey gave Harley Quinn’s story a better and different perspective.

By the end of Suicide Squad, the members of Task Force X were sent back to Belle Reve with ten years off their sentences. The Joker rescued Harley, and she wasn’t seen again until Birds of Prey. Within the movie, we saw Harley teaming up with Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya, and Huntress to keep young thief Cassandra Cain safe from crime lord Roman Sionis AKA Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Birds of Prey isn’t a Suicide Squad sequel, and it doesn’t include any of Harley’s former teammates, rather than focusing on her new life and adventures.

Birds of Prey opens with an animated sequence telling the critical events in Harley Quinn‘s life since she was petite. These included her time as a Task Force X member and her tumultuous relationship with the Joker. Before the events of Birds of Prey, Harley was seen leaving Belle Reve with the Joker, and she continued to be by his side for a jiffy until they broke up. The Joker drove her out on the Gotham City’s streets and left her devastated. Harley was taken in by Doc, who let her lodge in the apartment above. To get over the break-up, Harley watched a bunch of flicks, cut the dyed parts of her hair, and later adopted a laughing hyena she named after Bruce Wayne, all as a part of her emancipation process. Harley then took up roller derby as a part of her process. During all this point, she kept her split a secret as being the Joker’s girlfriend granted her protection within the criminal world – and it is the revelation of this that kick starts her story in Birds of Prey.
