Douglas, the on-screen father of Mulligan, wasn’t pleased with their budding romance, as he knew about their breakup beforehand. According to the Irish Examiner, he warned LaBeouf against dating the leading lady, emphasizing, “I warned Shia about that. I told him, ‘Do not get involved with your leading lady. Trust me. Whatever you do, don’t do that.’”  Despite his warning, the couple chose to pursue their relationship.

“I never really had anything in my life that was off-limits. But with this, just out of respect, I just don’t want to fuck around. She’s an unbelievably thought-provoking actress, the most talented actress I’ve ever met in my life, by leaps and bounds”.

“Neither one of us are fame whores. It works out. It’s not like we’re the premiere couple; we’re not the red carpet king and queen.”

The couple then split shortly after a year in 2010.  Douglas may have had reservations about their relationship from the beginning. He might be aware of the implications and consequences that would arise from their romantic affairs. This could be why the actor warned LaBeouf about dating Mulligan in advance.

According to The Times (via the Daily Mai), LaBeouf explained the reason behind the split, saying his relationship with Mulligan had become strenuous due to their differences in opinion.

“Sensibilities, cultures, histories. There were differences, that’s all. She’s happy as hell right now, and we wouldn’t have been able to make it like that. She was chasing marriage, family, and kids more than I was.”

LaBeouf also alluded to the fact that Mulligan intended for a family life, but the Transformers star wasn’t interested in a committed relationship back then. Eventually, both moved on with different partners as Mulligan married singer Marcus Mumford, whereas LaBeouf started dating fellow actor Mia Goth.
