Why Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock Is De-Aged In Spider-Man: No Way Home?
Alfred Molina’s Doctor Oak is looking de-aged in the Spiderman: No Way Home trailer but there is a possibility that Tobey Maguire’s Spiderman won’t look the same.
Marvel revealed a de-aged look of Alfred Molina in the Spiderman: No Way Home trailer. But there is a reason why the makers will not do the same with Tobey Maguire’s titular hero. The new Spiderman: No Way Home trailer completely changed the way fans used to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Spiderman’s identity got revealed in Spiderman: Far from Home, Peter is now looking forward to changing that in the upcoming sequel. To regain anonymity, Parker seeks help from Doctor Strange; the solution is wiping the memory of his identity. Apparently, the spell will erase all the memories of everyone Peter knows and loves. As a result, he’d attempt to reinvent Doctor Strange’s enchantment. This will open up a portal to the Multiverse.
Since the spell goes awry, some characters from Parker’s past break into the Marvel Cinematic Universe again. Alfred Molina’s Doctor Ock is one of them. He was an antagonist in Sam Raimi’s Spiderman 2. Doc Ock appeared in Spiderman: No Way Home trailer, showcasing his signature tentacles. Once he emerges from a cloud of smoke and dust, Molina says “Hello, Peter”. Spiderman: No Way Home’s trailer also hints that Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman will also come back. Apart from these characters, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, who have portrayed Spiderman in past are also expected to make a comeback.
While Spiderman: No Way Home’s trailer de-ages Doctor Ock, it is doubtful that makers will do the same or not for Maguire. It has been around 17 years that Doc Ock faced off with Spiderman in Spiderman 2. Keeping the time when Doc Ock sacrificed himself in a loop, a little de-aging technology sounds fair for his return to his past form. Apparently, Marvel often de-ages its characters for the films. But at the same time, there is a strong reason why the MCU will not de-age Tobey Maguire’s Spiderman.
Death is the reason behind Doctor Ock’s de-aging. In Spiderman 2, Ock attempts to pursue a nuclear experiment that threatens to destroy New York City. When Spiderman confronts him, he assesses that the AI in his metal tentacles is corrupting his actions and decisions but Doc has a part of him left that could take enough control to destroy everything about his experiment. He ends up sacrificing himself to destroy everything he created. Thus, it is pretty much clear that Ock would not age anymore after dying.
On the other hand, if Maguire does show up de-aged, it would depict that Marvel is plucking Spiderman from a specific timeline. That is why Maguire’s Spiderman needs to look similar to the actor’s current appearance. With that said, Spiderman: No Way Home is all set to get its theatrical release on December 17, 2021.
