Squid Game 2 trailer showcases Lee Jung-Jae re-entering a life-or-death game with an agenda

The hotly anticipated second season of Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Squid Game is just around the corner. Ahead of the release of the show, a trailer was recently released as the final reveal of the streaming giant’s annual Geeked Week fan event.

The trailer showcased Lee Jung-jae, who played Seong Gi-hun, donning his original Player 456 tracksuit and re-entering the game once again. Deadline reports, season 2 takes place three years after Gi-hun won the prize, dismissed his plans to go to the United States, and is now back with an agenda.

The actor’s character is ready to go through the game of life and death to win a ₩45.6 billion prize. Apart from Jung-jae, Lee Byun-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo return to reprise their roles as survivors from season one. Squid Game not only became one of the most-watched shows on Netflix but also managed to break the barriers for foreign language content on the streaming platform. Creator Dong-hyuk had previously shared in a letter to fans that the show will conclude with a third season and teased a little bit about Jung-jae’s character for season 2. He wrote (via EW),

Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1, returns and joins the games again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.

The creator mentioned that he is thrilled to see the seed that he planted in creating a show like Squid Game has grown so much and bears fruit through the end of the story. He also told Netflix in 2023 that he does have a lot on his shoulders, but he’ll make sure the wait is worth it.

Fans react to Squid Game Season 2

The popularity of Squid Game is unmatched to date, as there has not been a show that is as terrifying and heartbreaking as it is. Despite its dark and violent plot, the show managed to impress the audience, and the creator believed that it’s due to the irony that hopeless grownups are ready to risk their lives to win a kids’ game. He said the games are simple and easy, so viewers can give more focus to each character rather than complex game rules. (via BBC)

The games on the show also had a bit of nostalgia, especially for the South Korean audience. The treatment of all characters on the show is equal no matter where and how they come from. Fans have now reacted to the trailer, with one stating, Ain’t no damn way he playing the game again, and then he number 456? Another user mentioned that the stakes for season 2 have never been higher.

Talking about Lee Jung-jae’s character, a user wrote, ‘Escapes a death game, chance to walk away with freedom, decides to go back for a revenge tour.’ A lot of users were thrilled to just know that their favorite show will be back on-screen in December.

The executive producer Kim Ji-yeon shared with Netflix in December 2023 that the cast and crew are truly pouring their hearts and souls into filming season two, and the team hopes people stay tuned and will root for them. In 2021, Google reported that Squid Game was the most searched television show on search engines. (via CNET)
