Zac Efron skyrocketed to fame in 2006 with Disney’s High School Musical, in which he played Troy Bolton. The movie became a huge hit worldwide, and the actor went from being unknown to a global star almost instantly. The movies made over $100 million for Disney, making Efron a big star in pop culture.

Unlike many other actors who started on the Disney Channel, he made deliberate choice to play a variety of roles. This helped the San Luis Obispo native avoid being stuck in one type of character and allowed him to grow into a leading actor in Hollywood instead of just being known as a teen heartthrob.

Efron was also slated to star in the remake of Footloose, a movie in which Kevin Bacon was the main character. However, he didn’t do it for a good reason. If he had taken the role then it would have become a total classic.

Here’s Why Zac Efron Skipped Footloose Remake Role

Zac Efron, who shot to fame after starring in the Disney Channel’s High School Musical, never wanted to be just another singing and dancing teen idol. He has always shown his desire to act in a wider variety of roles by choosing interesting projects.

From playing the fun-loving Link Larkin in the musical Hairspray to taking on the role of a complex teenager in 17 Again, Efron has proven himself as a versatile actor with a lot to offer.

Interestingly, in 2007, he was also considered to play the lead in a remake of Footloose, but ultimately decided not to do that movie. The Footloose remake eventually came out in 2011 with Kenny Wormald in the starring role. Efron told People:

I’m sure ‘Footloose’ would have been a huge challenge, but the actors that I love and the actors that work really hard in this industry are always shaking things up, trying new genres, acquiring new skill sets. That’s what’s always going to appeal to me: the unknown.

The actor showed his admiration for those who take risks, try new things, and push themselves out of their comfort zones. Efron, who had already starred in two musicals—High School Musical and Hairspray—might have wanted to try something new outside of this genre. That’s why he decided not to take the role of Ren McCormack.

If Zac Efron had starred in the Footloose remake, it could have been a massive win for the movie in a few ways. Back then, Efron was a super popular young actor, hot off the heels of the High School Musical movies. Having him on board would have meant big things for the film, too!

His impressive singing and dancing skills (as seen in movies like Hairspray and High School Musical) make him a natural fit for a Footloose remake. The Iron Claw star’s talent could have brought a fresh take on the classic story and introduced it to a whole new generation of fans.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Zac Efron turn down the 2011 Footloose remake?

Zac Efron was cast as Ren McCormack in the Footloose remake back in July 2007 but exited the project in March 2009. He later told People he wanted to avoid repeating himself after already starring in two musicals, High School Musical and Hairspray. Efron said he was drawn instead to “the unknown,” preferring roles that pushed him into new genres rather than familiar musical territory.

Who ended up playing the lead role instead of Efron?

After Efron departed, the studio considered other actors before Kenny Wormald was cast as Ren McCormack for the 2011 remake, which released that October. The original 1984 Footloose starred Kevin Bacon in the role and became a cultural touchstone, which is part of why Efron’s potential involvement was seen as a chance to revive that legacy for a new generation.

How did Efron’s Disney fame set up his later career choices?

Efron became a global star in 2006 after Disney’s High School Musical, which grossed over $100 million for the studio and made him a teen idol. Rather than lean into that image, he deliberately chased varied roles to avoid typecasting. Turning down Footloose reflected that broader strategy, and it helped him grow into a more versatile leading actor in Hollywood.
