X-Men ’97 Creator Has an Upsetting News For Marvel Fans Ahead of Season 2
One of Marvel’s latest successful shows has been the X-Men ’97 series, which carries the legacy of the 90’s X-Men: The Animated Series and hooks the viewers with its continuation. The showrunner, Beau DeMayo, has proven himself to be the mastermind behind this revival of the nostalgic era, carefully designing an engaging storyline that combines paying tribute to the original and bringing fresh narratives.
On one hand, the show’s release and its success were being celebrated. On the other hand, just a week before the premiere of X-Men ’97, DeMayo and Marvel parted ways. It was shocking news for fans, especially after knowing that the showrunner had plans for the next season.
Beau DeMayo Gives Update on Next Season of X-Men ’97
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DeMayo’s company email as well as his Instagram account was deleted. The reason for his departure is still not disclosed by either side. He was hired in 2021.
However, in a recent conversation with his fans on X, DeMayo talked about his plans for the next season of X-Men ’97 and how much he will contribute. A user was complimenting him for his work and asking him for further updates and DeMayo replied to his questions.
Thank you. I did write a lot of season 2. However, unlike Season 1, I will not be heavily involved or leading production, cast records, design, editorial, post, music, etc., nor doing any production rewrites as it relates to the creative vision of the show. #xmen97

It’s still unclear how much Beau DeMayo will be able to contribute in the next season of X-Men ’97.
A similar thing happened in 2023 when Marvel fired head writers and directors of Daredevil: Born Again in the middle of the production process after the SAG-AFTRA strike started. The showrunners of Moon Knight, She-Hulk, and Secret Invasion also had their issues.
Marvel Studios’ Perspective on the Departure of Beau DeMayo
Amidst the reports and rumors, Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, has spoken about DeMayo’s exit in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“I can’t talk about the details, but I can say that Beau had real respect and passion for these characters and wrote what I think are excellent scripts that really the rest of the team were able to draw inspiration from [to] build this amazing show that’s on screen.”
When he was asked if he would consider DeMayo’s departure as firing, Winderbaum said,
“I don’t. ‘We parted ways’ is the best way I could say.”
Winderbaum’s statement provides little clarity about what exactly led to DeMayo’s departure. Nevertheless, while talking to Variety, he did say that he was satisfied with DeMayo’s achievements and said that his scripts were very good.
“He did excellent work writing seasons 1 and 2, and I can’t wait for fans to see the series. The entire team came together to create a revival worthy of the X-Men’s 60-year legacy.”
The second season of X-Men ’97 may be waiting just around the corner, but fears of losing DeMayo’s direct participation have made the future of the series feel a bit uncertain regarding its authenticity. Only time will tell whether the X-Men ’97 team can overcome the obstacles and live up to the expectations set by the first season.
