‘You can call me a lot of things, but not a hypocrite’: The Mummy Star Brendan Fraser Becomes a Legend, Vows To Never Attend Golden Globes After What They Did To Him
The good ones always suffer! Brendan Fraser says that he won’t attend the Golden Globes Award ceremony in 2023, even if he gets nominated. The Whale actor has a high chance of getting nominated for Best Actor for his upcoming release. Fraser might even go on to win the category, but he won’t be attending the ceremony. The actor has some unresolved issues with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The Mummy star was assaulted by Philip Berk back in 2003, who was the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association back then. Fraser accused the ex-president of sexual assault, but sadly, the HFPA didn’t do anything against Berk. But later, in 2018, HFPA expelled him for sharing an article on Black Lives Matter.
In a recent interview, The Mummy star says that he has not forgotten what the HFPA has done to him. And he will be boycotting the Golden Globes Award ceremony. The HFPA has yet to apologize to Brendan Fraser.
Fraser says he has more history with HFPA than respect
In an interview with the GQ, The Mummy star refused to attend the Golden Globes Award ceremony. He opened up to GQ about the sexual assault incident and how things have been with him. Back in 2003, Philip Berk tried to touch him inappropriately. When The Mummy star complained about this no actions were taken against the perpetrator.
The HFPA promised the star an investigation saying, “The HFPA stands firmly against sexual harassment and the type of behavior described in this article,” but ended up doing nothing. Later they issued a statement saying,
“Although it was concluded that Mr. Berk inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that it was intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.”
The Whale star didn’t get justice and this whole incident was forgotten as if it never happened. Later in 2018 Berk shared an article on Black Lives Matter and sent that to some of the members of the HFPA. He described BLM as a “racist hate movement”. The HFPA took strict action against him and expelled Berk from the association.
After this incident, The Mummy star in an interview commented on this news, “I knew they would close ranks,”
“I knew they would kick the can down the road. I knew they would get ahead of the story. I knew that I certainly had no future with that system as it was.”
The unfair treatment of Fraser by the HFPA has not been forgotten by the actor. When Fraser was going through a hard time, they ignored him and now they expect him to join the award ceremony organized by HFPA. The Whales star says,
“No, I will not participate,” further adding, “And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that.”
The HFPA has not apologized to him yet. As Fraser said, he has more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than he has respect for them.
