Her comments about how ‘you have to write something pretty sh**ty to get it made’ will definitely turn heads. Having navigated Hollywood herself, Johnson seems to have strong opinions about the quality of work that makes it to the big screen.

Is she throwing shade at her own past projects, or just calling out the industry’s obsession with mediocrity? Either way, it’s clear that Johnson’s foray into directing comes with a hefty dose of critique aimed at the way films are made today.

Dakota Johnson recently shared her frustration about the state of Hollywood writing. During an interview with Josh Horowitz on his YouTube channel, she discussed her new short film Loser Baby and the challenges of getting quality projects made. The 34-year-old went on to say:

This one we just wanted to make it for its own sake, Talia is an incredible writer and we had worked together on writing a television show that we had sold but it never got made. It was too good… seems to be what’s going on these days like you have to write something pretty sh**ty in order for it to actually get made. So, if didn’t get made.

So, Johnson had a bit of a Hollywood rant recently. She was referring to her experience with a TV show script she and collaborator Talia Bernstein had written. The Hollywood star joked that their high-quality show was ‘too good’ to get made, implying that nowadays, only the not-so-great projects get the green light.

It sounds like Johnson might be being a bit ironic or forgetful with her critique. She’s criticizing Hollywood for making poor-quality movies, but do you remember her own past projects, like Fifty Shades of Grey and Madame Web, which some folks thought had pretty bad writing and weren’t great overall? It’s a bit like criticizing a messy kitchen while your own is a mess.

Looking Ahead—Dakota Johnson’s Directing Future

At Deadline’s TIFF studio, Dakota Johnson gave the scoop on her directing gig and what’s next for her in the film biz. She gushed about her experience making Loser Baby, saying how natural it felt. Johnson clearly enjoyed calling the shots, and it sounds like she’s open to directing more in the future but remains realistic about her growth.

The actress also admitted that she has a lot to learn and isn’t sure if she’s ready to jump into feature films just yet. However, the Fifty Shades alum also stated that her feelings could change. Johnson’s down-to-earth attitude and commitment to growing as a director are clear.

Know that Loser Baby isn’t her first directorial project. Her directorial debut was with Coldplay’s music video for their doo-wop take on Cry Cry Cry from their album Everyday Life. It looks like the Austin native got her hands full with cool projects—and we’re here for it!
