The Three Lions of England received a personal message from Prince William, who expressed his gut-wrenching disappointment at the team’s World Cup exit.
Prince William tweeted in the wake of England’s World Cup exit after their 2-1 quarterfinal loss to France. The England team lost to France 2-1 on December 10th at the Al Bayt Stadium.
Prince William Gutted as Captain Harry Kane Missed Penalty
The 40-year-old royal, who serves as the FA’s president, has expressed his condolences to manager Gareth Southgate and his team, following the men’s national football team’s 2-1 loss to France in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
“You put so much into this tournament,” the Prince of Wales wrote in a tweet. He got quite emotional as England is out of the 2022 World Cup after the 2-1 loss to France.
Harry Kane, England’s captain, missed a penalty in the 84th minute that would have tied the game, adding insult to injury to the nation. With a beautiful strike after finding space outside the box, Aurelien Tchouameni gave the French the lead in the 17th minute.
But England was able to overcome the reigning world champions, and Kane’s penalty kick from the spot gave the Three Lions an equalizer. With the goal, Kane matched Wayne Rooney’s Three Lions scoring record of 53 goals. However, Olivier Giroud’s goal in the 78th minute gave France the lead again.
Mason Mount was fouled in the box, rekindling hopes for England, but Kane missed his spot-kick over the crossbar. Following that, France was able to finish off the remainder of the match to advance to the semifinals against Morocco, who are the first African team to advance to the World Cup stage.
