“You’re an actor, but you should have refused”: Hollywood Star is in Big Trouble After S*xual Joke About Kate Middleton
Balduino Basto might have gotten away, but Sen Monro didn’t.
Sen Monro, the acclaimed actor known for his portrayal of mafia boss Balduino Basto in the popular Amazon Prime series Citadel, landed himself at the center of immense criticism surrounding his character’s controversial joke concerning Kate Middleton.
In a recent episode of the show, which stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden in the lead roles, a scene depicted Madden’s character seeking Basto’s assistance in infiltrating the office of the Chief of the Armed Forces. Let’s find out what the controversial joke is, and why has it caused such an uproar among the Royal Family patrons.
What did Sen Monro’s character say about Kate Middleton in Citadel?
In the third episode of the Russo Brothers‘ spy thriller series Citadel, which premiered on May 5 on Amazon Prime Video, a pivotal moment unfolds as Mason (Richard Madden) seeks the aid of Balduino Basto, portrayed by the talented actor Sen Monro, to gain access to the Chief of Armed Forces’ office, to which the character of Balduino Basto delivered a crude dialogue about Kate Middleton that shocked the audiences.
“The chief of armed forces? You might as well have asked me how to get between the legs of the Duchess of Cambridge!” said Balduino in reply to Mason’s request. The clip went viral and the Royal patrons didn’t waste time criticizing Sen and the show itself for making a derogatory and s*xual remark about the Princess of Wales.
How Did Citadel Star Respond to the Backlash?
Addressing the recent criticism, Sen Monro broke his silence in an interview with Express UK. He expressed his view on the controversy surrounding his character’s dialogue, stating, “Everyone is making a big hoo-ha about the line – it’s meant to be derogatory, it’s a metaphor.” Monro highlighted how people were getting upset on behalf of Princess Kate, stating,
“One of the things I had on social media was ‘how dare you say the line? Yes, you’re an actor. But you should have refused.’ I’m being directed by an Academy Award winner – what am I supposed to say?”
As an actor committed to his craft, Monro explained,
“I’m an actor there to do a job. At the end of the day, I’m an actor paid to portray a character and, if it’s necessary for the character to say those lines, it’s not for me to judge. It’s for me to deliver, and I deliver what I’m paid to do.”
Reflecting on the unexpected controversy, Monro admitted, “I didn’t think there’ll be such controversy” since the episode with the line aired three weeks ago. However, he mentioned that he now sees the positive side of the attention, stating, “People are talking about me as an actor, and it’s nice to be in the spotlight for doing a good job.”
Citadel is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
