“You’re perfect at that”: Barry Keoghan Wanted to Replicate Robert Pattinson’s One Quality After Starring Together in Batman
Irish actor Barry Keoghan, who is known for his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, also appeared in a minor cameo role as the Joker in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which starred Robert Pattinson as Batman and was highly praised for it. The actor had revealed that he took it upon himself and sent his audition tape, after which he landed the role four months later.
The director later released a five-minute-long deleted scene from The Batman in which Robert Pattinson’s Batman is interrogating Barry Keoghan’s Joker. Even though the actor appeared for a mere few minutes on-screen, he has been highly praised for it as it has been said that Keoghan’s Joker could be a unique take on the Clown Prince of Crime. But there is one thing Barry Keoghan would like to have just like his co-star.
Barry Keoghan admires Robert Pattinson for playing a leading role
In an interview with Wonderland, Barry Keoghan mentioned that he hopes to work with the Sadie Brothers, Lynne Ramsay, and Barry Jenkins in the future, and for that, he tries to use the law of attraction. Keoghan explained,
“I have a list of directors that tend to knock around on these interviews by saying their names. I try to use the law of attraction. But I really have now ticked off a lot of directors on that. You know, like Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Chloé Zhao. So I’ve got to make a feckin’ new list, man. I really do.”
Robert Pattinson had also joined the actor in the interview and Keoghan mentioned to the actor that since he had worked with Nolan in Tenet, he’d understood that there is a sort of pull that makes him want to work with the directors. He explained,
“You know they create these universes, man, that you just want to be a part of. It was sort of that Wes Anderson thing. Like Yorgos, these people create these worlds and universes that you’re sort of like, ‘I’d love to be just in that for a day.”
Barry Keoghan says his only goal now is to play a leading man and added that he did get a chance to do that in his upcoming movie Saltburn alongside Jacob Elordi and challenge himself. Keoghan did not hold himself back from sharing that he admires Robert Pattinson for being a leading man in his movies. He told him,
“You’re perfect at that, Rob. I admire you for that. You can do that. I wanted to see. Could I do it? Because I’ve come into movies supporting and doing scenes and I love it. It’s whatever the role requires. But I wanted to see. Could I lead a movie? Could I keep the audience engaged? So that was my plan.”
The Irish actor also added that now he is just thinking about whether he could continue to appear as a leading man in good projects with good filmmakers.

Barry Keoghan describes his Joker as ‘a bit charming and a bit hurt’
In an interview with GQ UK last year, Barry Keoghan shared that his version of Joker is a bit charming and a bit hurt and a broken-down boy. The actor for his cameo in The Batman refused to wear blue lenses because he explained,
“I wanted some sort of human in there behind the makeup. I want people to relate to him, to know this is a façade he puts on.”
Matt Reeves had revealed to Variety that people should not have their hopes high with Keoghan’s character because they are not sure if they would return to that character in the sequel movie or not. It should be noted that The Batman Part II is confirmed and scheduled for October 2025 release but Barry Keoghan’s return is not confirmed.
