The co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog Yuji Naka has taken to social media to thank fans for helping to push Paramount to change the reviled redesign of the character for the upcoming movie. The first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was revealed to an overwhelmingly negative response, with most of the criticism aimed at Sonic’s design.

The movie version of Sonic evokes the uncanny valley with his long limbs, human teeth, and separated eyes. Sonic has also lost his gloves and now has hairy hands, which makes him look more like a Dr. Seuss character. The only aspect of the trailer that received any praise was Jim Carey’s performance as Dr. Robotnik, though that has more to do with him clearly having fun with the role than its accurate representation of the character from the games.

The backlash against Sonic’s design is so severe that the director of Sonic the Hedgehog, Jeff Fowler promises to have it changed in the final version of the movie. The movement to change the design of Sonic was successful before it even began and there was one notable voice thanking the fans for the power of their disdain – Yuji Naka, the co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog. Naka took to Twitter to thank the fans for their help in getting the design of Sonic changed for the movie.

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has taken many beatings from the fans over the years, with incidents such as Sonic kissing a human girl in one of his games causing rumblings in the gaming community. However, the terrible Sonic design for the movie took disdain for the character to new levels of mainstream attention, so it should come as no surprise that one of the co-creators of Sonic would want to see his big screen debut go off without a hitch.

 

It was believed for the longest time that there was a curse on video game movies, starting with the terrible Super Mario Bros. film. The early buzz concerning Detective Pikachu is that it is the first movie to break the curse, yet the Sonic the Hedgehog movie looks set to drain all of the goodwill brought about by Detective Pikachu. The fact that the producers of the movie have listened to the response from fans and are changing Sonic’s design is a good start, but the movie is due to be released in six months the question now is whether that will even be enough time to properly change the design?
