Who wouldn’t want a spin-off in a James Gunn franchise? especially when it’s of the Marvel Cinematic UniverseNot every actor reveals their wishes openly for a franchise they are a part of, but Zoe Saldana proved to be exceptional. The actress openly revealed that she would love to be the focus of a spin-off of James Gunn’s franchise before it ends. The Avatar star explains that the spin-off project should center around the relationship between Gamora and her sister Nebula as she believes that the sisterhood is complex and controversial making it a compelling storyline. According to The Direct, in an episode of Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Saldana said:

“I would have loved to have just seen a spin-off based on that sisterhood. It’s so complex. It’s so controversial. It’s also so relatable in a sense that, not me by personal experience, but knowing that there are siblings out there that have had troubled lives at home, and managed to survive because of their kinship, because of their brotherhood or their sisterhood.”

Throughout the MCU film journey, the relationship between the characters Nebula and Gamora has evolved from being wrathful to becoming a true family who overcame their shared childhood trauma. The Star Trek star sees this transformation as important and relatable as it can be encountered in real life as well between siblings who find strength in their kinship.

Gamor and Nebula were introduced as the adopted daughters of the villainous and powerful Thanos, who dealt with trauma in their childhood that eventually made the sisters’ relationship quite complex and strained. Both Gamora and Nebula are highly skilled assassins and are part of Thanos’ group The Children of Thanos. Due to the abusive upbringing of their father, the sisters had a deeply dysfunctional and antagonistic relationship they endured at the hands of Thanos. According to The Direct, James Gunn once opened up about the growth of the adopted sisters and said:

“And we see, you know, Nebula and Gamora as the way they are now, and they’ve changed roles from what they were in ‘Guardians 1’.”

It would have been exciting and impactful to watch more of the sisters’ relationship within the series that depicted their journey from conflicts and grief to forgiveness and family but the story within James Gunn’s project has already executed it in the best way. Zoe Saldana’s Gamora and Karen Gillan‘s Nebula story arc is undeniably one of the most powerful and resonant aspects of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
