While the studios focus on explosions and high octane car chases, the movie making industry is at a conundrum. Of sorts, that is. Should Hollywood stop making these heart-touching rom-coms that have been the staple of low budget, hard hitting, family-friendly movies? 2021 saw the return of the movies to the theaters with West Side Story and No Time To Die. But these Hallmark-esque movies are also making their case and presence felt. 2 Hearts is opening to around 1500 theaters in the United States.
And truth be told, 2 Hearts is making quite a strong case. The movie is a flawed but gut-wrenching romantic religious charity case that hangs with the element of Gods’ Plan by a thread. It cuts close but it does cross the finish line with flying colors. And no matter how you look at it, it is a recipe for both family-friendly fun as well as disaster. Let us elaborate in detail.
The Good Outweighs The Bad In 2 Hearts
The movie is sometimes too sweet for its own good. Its flirtation with obvious tropes can be a bit overwhelming. Even the lead characters sound too idealistic to be true. Jacob Elordi plays Chris, a College Freshman. he falls for the senior at first sight, Sam (Tiera Skovbye). The ‘we are so much in love we are almost blind’ trope makes the story look awkward at times. Jacob Elordi did such a good job in Kissing Booth. His talents could have been put to good use here. At times, he is such a goody two shoes it makes us look the other way. Tiera Skovbye’s Sam does a surprisingly good job.
The romance between Jorge and Leslie is actually a lot less annoying. The YA courtship romance might be cringeworthy. But the love story of the heir to a huge Cuban Rum empire and a stewardess is not original either. It has the signature of being inspired by Hallmark movies all over it. But that does not mean it is a bad thing. Despite an unoriginal premise, Jorge and Leslie strike a chord with the audience.
So why are we ranting so much about the movie if we liked the movie? It is because of the unique pace and screenplay. the plot direction seems like a “It’s A Wonderful Life” but in reverse. There are obviously some twists and turns you may or may not be able to anticipate. But in the end, the message the movie delivers is that we are pieces in a puzzle. That no matter how lucky or unlucky you think you are, the Universe has a plan for you and you fit right in.
2 Hearts may not be the most perfect story or movie. It may not have the greatest of characters. But we would still recommend you to watch it because it delivers a message all too needed in these trying times.
Have faith. Everything will be taken care of.
