$800M Man Dwayne Johnson Reportedly in Talks to Replace Michael Keaton in Iconic ’90s Movie Remake
Dwayne Johnson is reportedly being eyed to star in a remake of the 1998 holiday film Jack Frost, according to insider Daniel Richtman. The original fantasy drama starred Michael Keaton as a musician who dies and comes back to life as a snowman. If Johnson signs on, it would mark the latest reboot for the actor, who has helped launch revivals of Jumanji, Baywatch, and other properties. With his box office power, a new take on Jack Frost could resonate more strongly with audiences than the first film, which was both a critical and commercial disappointment.
Could a Remake Improve on the Original?
According to ScreenGeek, the 1998 Jack Frost was directed by Troy Miller and written by Mark Steven Johnson, Steve Bloom, Jonathan Roberts, and Jeff Cesario. It grossed just $34 million worldwide against a budget of $40-85 million and holds a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
A remake could offer the chance to rework the premise and better execute the story of a father given a second chance to connect with his son.
“The emotional core of the original Jack Frost is quite poignant,” said entertainment writer Daichi Sato. “With the right script and direction, a remake could really amplify those elements.”
While Dwayne Johnson is reportedly in talks for the lead role, no director or writers are currently attached to the potential project. It remains to be seen who could come on board to guide the film’s new approach.
“They would likely want a director who excels at family films with magical realism,” noted film producer Haruko Okamoto. “And screenwriters who can craft something truly heartwarming but still fun and humorous.”
Some promising candidates could include Jennifer Lee, who co-directed Frozen and wrote the screenplays for both that film and its hit sequel. Or Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the duo behind heartfelt comedies like Game Night and Vacation Friends.
Will Audiences Embrace Dwayne Johnson as a New Frosty Lead?
Michael Keaton’s charm and gravitas as both a comedian and serious actor defined his performance as the voice of Jack Frost. Dwayne Johnson would bring his own unique energy and commitment to the role.
“Seeing The Rock take on such an unexpected part could attract curiosity and attention,” said entertainment analyst Daiki Ito. “His natural charisma helps him connect with all ages. Paired with a solid script, he would make a compelling new Jack.”
While not yet confirmed, a remake of Jack Frost starring Johnson seems like a smart nostalgic play. And with the right creative vision, it could conjure up some fresh magic.
