Elizabeth Olsen reveals Russo Brothers Struggled with her Scarlet Witch

The Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda Maximoff, is one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. The actress, Elizabeth Olsen, revealed that the director duo of Joseph and Anthony Russo had a difficult time dealing with her character. Joss Whedon is the one who introduced Wanda Maximoff to the Marvelites. She was introduced to the fans in Avengers: Age of Ultron, first as a villain-turned-hero.

Whedon couldn’t continue making Marvel movies and the Russo Brothers took up the mantle of leading the MCU through the latter acts of its narrative following Age of Ultron. However, Olsen feared the directors may have gotten a little lost with her character when they had access to the Scarlet Witch. Olsen once told Birth.Movies.Death.

“They were like, ‘She can do anything. If someone is fighting, she can end it quickly. I don’t know what to do!”

She believed that it might just be a matter of time before the Director brothers explore her character and examine how to use it creatively. She often feels that she ought to give some ideas while working with the Russo brothers, especially when it comes to the Scarlet Witch moments. She says,

On the day they told me to launch the Cap when they found it didn’t look good, they thought it would be better to come up with more interesting ideas”,

Olsen even acknowledges that while some people might think the decisions are random, they are very deliberate and thought out.

Olsen even shared how Joss Whedon handled her character. She realized that Whedon has a personal approach to guiding her Scarlet Witch. He had her moves in his brain and even showed them in front of us.

“Joss had actual movements in his brain, and that’s how the movements started. We would try and hit these marks that Joss, literally in front of us, did. He also has these funny knees, wrists, and hands, and my choreographer Jenny and I were like, ‘Man, he really worked hard on this.”

Whedon perhaps understood the character better because he was already an avid admirer of the Scarlet Witch. This influence was evident in emphasizing her character and her special abilities, marking a character progression. “It was very tangible in Ultron, but now it’s become about her stepping into her role and her powers,” she remembered”.

Elizabeth Olsen Unaware of Scarlet Witch’s Villainous Turn

Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness,

In the recent Doctor Strange sequel, Olsen portrayed the Scarlet Witch in a somewhat different way than fans had come to expect.  In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she appeared to embrace her full villainy out of desperation. But Olsen was unaware of the character’s development until just before filming began. Olsen once told Buzzfeed,

“I was shocked the moment they told me what it was about. I was shocked at the moment they said, ‘You’re the villain.’ No one told me until right before we shot it, so that was shocking.”

Olsen was ignorant about her characterization in the movie and that she was finally becoming a full-fledged villain. She believes the Scarlet Witch learns from her experiences, attributing her actions to grappling with intense emotions.

Which MCU movies and directors are involved in Elizabeth Olsen’s comments?

Joss Whedon directed Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), where Wanda Maximoff first appeared as a villain-turned-hero. The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joe Russo, then directed Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, in which the character also featured.

Was Elizabeth Olsen aware of Scarlet Witch’s villainous turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

No. According to her comments, Olsen said she was shocked when told she was the villain and that no one informed her until just before filming began. She framed Wanda’s actions as the result of intense emotion rather than simple villainy.
