After ‘Taken’, Liam Neeson Returns With Yet Another Thriller With a Near-Impossible Storyline Called ‘Retribution’
Fans of the actor Liam Neeson can’t contain their excitement as a trailer for his upcoming high-octane thriller has just been released. The upcoming Lionsgate movie is said to be a remake of 2015’s Spanish movie.
The actor has previously appeared in action thrillers like Taken, which came out in 2008, and is excited to be a part of this project. He has played countless variations of the tough hero who somehow finds himself in twisted and dangerous situations which is very well-liked by the audience.
What is Liam Neeson’s upcoming movie about?
Liam Neeson’s going to appear in Retribution, which includes a high-speed car chase to an abundance of fiery explosions. The trailer for the movie was recently released, which left the audience who is a fan of action-thrillers impressed and wanting to watch the 71-year-old actor on-screen super soon.
Talking about the movie, with the trailer released, it can be seen that an anonymous phone call warns the actor’s character, who is Matt Turner, about the bomb that sits underneath his car seat and then the high-speed car chase sequence begins for Turner to fulfill the demands of the caller. It is also shown that if Turner puts pressure on the seat, the bomb could explode.
In one sequence that has been shown in the trailer, Matt Turner is asked by the caller to open up his glovebox to take out the weapon via which he is supposed to kill his friend, but he throws it away, and then his friend’s car explodes. The trailer set an interesting narrative for the audience, making them excited about the movie.
The actor who is known to do most of his stunts by himself had revealed during an interview that his sons sort of approve of his action star status, but whether he has performed any of the action stunts in Retribution on his own or not is not known as of now.
Is Liam Neeson planning to retire from action movies?
At the age of 71, it is pretty natural for an actor to wonder if they can still do action movies and Neeson is no different as he shot to fame as an aged action hero, which later set a trend of aged action heroes. The actor has been indicating that he would soon leave action movies.
Back in 2021, while promoting his movie Blacklight, he said, “I started being offered all these action scripts. And I’m going, ‘Wow. The lead is 29 years of age.’ I turn 70 this year, so I’m still getting away with it. I think the action movies will draw to a close — they have to. Audiences aren’t stupid, you know. They’re gonna go, ‘Oh, f— this guy, Liam Neeson. He’s got to be 71, 72, 73…’ I’ll stop at some stage.”
Earlier during a conversation with ET, the actor mentioned that he is planning to retire from action movies. He noted, “I’m 68 and a half — 69 this year. There’s a couple more I’m going to do this year — hopefully, COVID allows us — there’s a couple in the pipeline and then I think that will probably be it. Well, unless I’m on a Zimmer frame or something.”
Who stars alongside Liam Neeson in Retribution?
Nimród Antal directs Retribution, which was written by Christopher Salmanpour. Producers on the upcoming movie include Juan Sola, Jaume Collet-Serra, Andrew Rona, and Alex Heineman. Additionally, Matthew Modine, Noma Dumezweni, Jack Champion, Lilly Aspell, and Embeth Davidtz make cameos in the movie.
Liam Neeson, who has also starred in thrillers apart from action-thrillers including Batman Begins, said he is very unlikely to appear in more superhero films because all of the plots are the same. He did, however, mention that he has a great deal of respect for the film, but when asked about his work on Christopher Nolan’s film, he noted that it had a noir feel to it and, of course, the cast, including Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman was enough to make him say yes.
Retribution comes out on August 25th, 2023.
