The lead roles in Silver Linings Playbook were initially assigned to Hathaway and Wahlberg, but after The Hustle star quit, Russell selected Bradley Cooper instead of his good friend Wahlberg.

It is said that Wahlberg demanded a clause in his contract in case Hathaway backed out, asking for a $900,000 payout, which caused a rift in his friendship with Russell. Despite Hathaway’s departure, the director was able to avoid paying Wahlberg significant money since she chose to co-star with Hugh Jackman.

According to the producer, Harvey Weinstein, the Locked Down performer was not taking the lead role despite being his preferred choice. He shared,

“Anne wasn’t doing it and you know, she’s marvelous and wonderful and she was my choice. I love her.”

Russell and Weinstein both had Hathaway in mind, but it worked out for everyone in the end. She went on to win an Academy Award for her role in Les Miserables, while Silver Linings Playbook was a success with Jennifer Lawrence starring opposite Cooper, and Lawrence herself was awarded an Oscar.

Anne Hathaway’s decision to take on the role of Fantine in the film adaptation of Les Miserables turned out to be a career-defining move that ultimately led to her winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
