Barbenheimer Set to Destroy Box Office Records With $465 Million in Opening Weekend Alone
The two most anticipated films of the year, Barbie and Oppenheimer, or Barbenheimer are now available in theaters. The box office estimate for the first weekend of the movies, which were released on the same day last Friday, is excellent. They’re destroying the box office.
People are going gaga over Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of famed physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and Margot Robbie’s rendition of the iconic doll, Barbie. The two movie genres are completely opposite to one another and ought to have different audiences, but it appears that many are watching both movies. Barbenheimer is predicted to set a record at the box office by earning $465 million, just in the first weekend.
Barbie and Oppenheimer shatter box office records
The motion film industry is celebrating a remarkable weekend at the box office despite worries about potential interruptions brought on by the SAG-AFTRA strikes. The total domestic gross for Barbie by Warner Bros. and Oppenheimer by Universal was an astounding $465 million.
This post-pandemic record-breaking performance comfortably beats the opening weekend of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 which had a total of $281.8 million. It actually ranked fourth among all weekends in box office revenue, only behind Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Star Wars: Force Awakens.
The domestic gross for Barbie, starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, has now topped $161 million, giving it the highest opening weekend of 2023 to date. With over $300 million in revenue in its first three days of release, the movie has also been a big smash abroad.
Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt, also had a successful debut and is estimated to earn more than $165 million globally. J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist in charge of the Manhattan Project that created the atomic bomb, is the subject of the biopic.
It not only had the third-biggest opening of Christopher Nolan’s career in the United States and Canada, but it also had the best opening of an R-rated film this year, topping John Wick: Chapter 4. With a high 59% audience presence from the 18-to-34 age bracket, this achievement is proof of Nolan’s committed fan following, which he developed during the Dark Knight period.
Is Barbenheimer a good idea?
The idea of Barbenheimer, in which Warner Bros. paired the release of Greta Gerwig’s upbeat comedy Barbie with Christopher Nolan’s gritty drama Oppenheimer, has gone viral online. Initially, many struggled to decide between the two vastly dissimilar movies. Unexpectedly, many people began to choose to see both films back-to-back in an utterly bizarre double bill. Even well-known figures like Tom Cruise expressed interest in taking part in this unusual movie marathon.

But is Barbenheimer a good idea? According to a viewer, it is not a very wise idea. Viewers are emotionally overloaded and in need of processing time after watching Oppenheimer, a three-hour intense and graphic depiction of nuclear destruction. The movie begs for in-depth reflection. Instead, there is a sudden tonal shift that plunges the audience into the colorful, upbeat world of Barbie, which can be confusing and emotionally upsetting.
Even if Barbie, with its absurd and occasionally self-aware tone, has some darker overtones, they are unlikely to help viewers adjust to the change after being subjected to Oppenheimer‘s intense impact.
