The most recent box office champ, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the movie’s namesakes, broke the $1 billion barrier and won over audiences with its captivating plot. Barbie became the first movie directed by a woman to gross over $1 billion.

Before their film passed the $1 billion mark, the filmmaker who co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach told People magazine that she hoped their film would serve as the beginning of a world and several different Barbie movies. Fans are now speculating about whether there will be a sequel to the popular film and whether Margot Robbie will return as the stereotyped Barbie.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie sequel is in the works

According to reports by The Sun, the success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which starred actress Margot Robbie alongside actor Ryan Gosling, has now moved into talks of developing a sequel to the movie.

A source shared with the publication,

“Crew who worked on the Barbie film have been contacted to discuss working on the follow-up. It is very early days, but it’s become apparent that bosses want the same crew for the sequel as they did for the first. Emails have been sent but firmer details have to be finalised.”

It has been known that the movie has been the brainchild of the actress who got the ball rolling when back in 2018, she went to Mattel for rights and later got Gerwig involved to not only write the script but also direct it. The movie is about how Barbie, along with Ken, step into the real world after they are expelled from Barbieland, only to discover the reality of the world.

Margot Robbie starred not only starring in the movie as the leading lady, but as a producer on the movie, she was involved in the process of selecting the cast of the movie, but the actress was less assertive about the sequel as she mentioned in an interview with Time Magazine,

“It could go a million different directions from this point. But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.” Gerwig also added in her New York Times interview,

“At this moment, it’s all I’ve got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”

Barbie sets new box office record for Greta Gerwig

The movie that recently crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office is not only the first female-directed movie to hit the mark but also became the highest-grossing movie at the United States box office by a female director, solo or otherwise.

Greta Gerwig also achieved the record of becoming the highest-grossing female director of live-action movies at the box office, overtaking Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, which earned around $1.131 billion in 2019 whereas Barbie is at $1.184 billion.

Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz shared with Variety, “Successful movies lend themselves to more movies. Our ambition is to create film franchises. At the outset, we’re not saying, ‘Okay, let’s think already about movies two and three.’ Let’s get the first one right and make that a success. And if you do that, opportunities open up very quickly, once you establish the first movie as a successful representation of a franchise on the big screen.”

Will Margot Robbie return as a stereotypical Barbie in the sequel?

Barbie 2 for now is a far-fetched dream as the cast and crew are soaking in the success of the movie that has been smashing records at the box office and none of them reportedly have any contracts in place for the sequel, but the question arises is, if the sequel happens, will Robbie and Gosling return?

There has been no update on that as of now, but it can be assumed that if Barbie was the brainchild of Robbie, she could be involved in the process of a sequel even if she decides not to return to star in the movie. However, her character’s choice to become human does open possibilities for her to return and explore that option.

There has been no updates on if Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will reprise their roles

Talking about Gosling, who plays Ken in the movie, is reportedly known for his one-and-done approach to the characters he has played over the years. The actor has never played the same character more than once, so it is unclear if he is ready to change that and return as Ken.

Barbie is playing in theatres nationwide.
