Despite starting as a professional actress in 2001, Emily Blunt rose to fame in 2006 when she starred in the British TV drama Gideon’s Daughter. She won her first Golden Globe Award for her role in the drama. That same year, she starred in the fashion comedy-drama The Devil Wears Prada which features Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep in lead roles and became one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.

Over the years, Emily Blunt has appeared in numerous interviews and talk shows to promote her projects. She advocates for people who have a stutter as she has that speech impediment herself. However, she recently made headlines for an offensive comment she made years ago and it turns out it was not the only time she had gotten on the wrong foot with her fans.

In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Sicario actress said that the U.S. Citizenship test she had to take to become a citizen of America was rather hard and that she was sure that a lot of American people would not know how to answer those questions. She passed the test and became an American citizen only to regret it later.

During her appearance at the Toronto Film Festival (via The Hollywood Reporter) along with other Hollywood actors, Blunt said:

“I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate and I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?’”

The Oppenheimer actress is married to The Office fame John Krasinski and has two daughters with him. Not to mention that she stays in America for most of the time due to the nature of her work. The joke she made did not bode well with some people.

Emily Blunt usually avoids making any offensive comments. In fact, she has a reputation for being respectful and sincere. However, like any other human, on the odd chance that she makes mistakes, the public does not hold back their criticism of the actress. One X (formerly Twitter) user commented: “Does Emily regret it enough to reimburse us our movie ticket costs that have helped make her rich???”

Another Twitter user commented, “That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard today, trashing a country you just became a citizen of & name changes.”

In a YouTube video posted by The Young Turks, a user commented: “If she didn’t want to become a US citizen then why didn’t she just keep her green card, it wouldn’t have really made a difference.” Later, Blunt apologized for poking fun at the Republican presidential candidacy debate and also said that she did not mean to offend anyone by any means.
