Brie Larson’s absence from The Marvels’ promotion was addressed by Nia DaCosta

When The Marvels’ trailer premiered in April, which gave the fans a sneak peek at what they could expect from the sequel, they were thrilled to see three strong women leading the movie with their equally impactful and powerful characters. But the leading lady has not yet been involved in the promotion of the movie.

In a conversation with AbbyNews, director Nia DaCosta mentioned, “I’m hoping I’m not promoting the movie by myself. No one’s there to see me, either. They’re going to be like, ‘Where’s Brie Larson?’”

The reason why Brie Larson is not taking part in the promotions is due to the ongoing strike of the SAG-AFTRA, which started in July alongside the strike of the Writers Guild Association. The actress has not been allowed to engage in any kind of promotional material for the upcoming movie since then.

The Direct in August that the promotional tour for The Marvels would continue without the trio of Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, or any of the cast members of the movie. The three of them were a part of just one interview, which was held before the strike.

During her conversation with AbbyNews, the director touched on the topic of the SAG-AFTRA strike, mentioning that the solution would not come up in one negotiation. She added,

“I think we’re now in a new world. Everything that’s happening is existential research that our industry is doing. It won’t be solved in one round of negotiations. But I’m hoping that the studios can end the strike soon and get us all back to work — to work for them.”

There were concerns raised about the movie being delayed due to the strike and delay in the film’s marketing campaign, which the studios felt could have benefitted if actors, including the trio along with Samuel L. Jackson, who returned as Nick Furry, were a part of the promotion. However, the studios have maintained that they are holding onto the release date that was set for the movie to be the release date.

Samuel L. Jackson defends Brie Larson for playing Captain Marvel

The actress who became one of the biggest stars in the world after she played the character of Carol Danvers a.k.a., Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was surprisingly met with massive backlash by the fans for portraying a character who was originally a man. Some fans also commented at the time that there were better actors than Larson to portray the character.

The backlash continued as fans accused the actress of being sexist against men in her response to her comments on the lack of diversity in the industry and among film critics. She told Marie Claire that after she had noticed and experienced that the majority of the press junkets were white males, she would like to make sure that her press days were more inclusive.

She later clarified her comment when she appeared on Fox 5 and shared it with Kevin McCarthy:

“What I’m looking for is to bring more seats up to the table. No one is getting their chair taken away. There are not fewer seats at the table, there are just more seats at the table.”

In an interview with The Rolling Stones, while promoting his show Secret Invasion, actor Samuel L. Jackson addressed the backlash that followed by fans questioning Larson’s portrayal of the character. He said,

“Brie’s a stronger person than people give her credit for. She’s not going to let any of that stuff destroy her. These incel dudes who hate strong women, or the fact that she’s a feminist who has an opinion and expressed it? Everybody wants people to be who they want them to be. She is who she is, and she’s genuinely that.”

The Marvels arrives in theaters on Friday, November 10.
