Carl Weathers Nearly Quit Rocky After Getting a Real Beating From Aquaman 2 Star Who Put Sylvester Stallone in Hospital
In a shocking revelation from the set of the iconic 1985 film Rocky IV, it has come to light that Carl Weathers almost quit the movie after getting injured at the hands of Dolph Lundgren. Lundgren, who played the role of Ivan Drago, a Soviet boxer, left a trail of real-life injuries both on Sylvester Stallone and Carl Weathers, which halted the production of the movie many times.
Carl Weathers Almost Quit Rocky After Getting Beaten Badly
Carl Weathers of Rocky IV fame reportedly almost left the film after an intense fighting scene between him and Dolph Lundgren. The iconic Rocky IV movie in which Sylvester Stallone both stared and directed had decided that for the shooting of the fight, he and Dolph Lundgren would hit for real.
This idea of Stallone not only affected him but also had an impact on Carl Weathers. During a fighting scene between Weathers and Lundgren, Lundgren who was playing the role of Drago, delivered a near-fatal blow at Weathers.
As per Stallone, while he got the perfect shot, Weathers did not appreciate Lundgren’s aggressiveness. Talking about this in a 2006 interview, Stallone said,
“I saw Dolph Lundgren pick up Carl [Weathers] and heave him three feet into the corner when I was directing the scene between them; rather than retaliate, Carl got out of the ring and said something ferocious like, ‘I’m calling my agent… I quit!'”
After this Weathers stormed off the set which caused the production of the movie to go under a four-days halt.
Sylvester Stallone Got a Life-Threatening Injury During Rocky
Sylvester Stallone known for this Rocky series had a life-threatening injury during the filming of the movie. This happened when Dolph Lundgren punched Stallone right in the chest. Talking about this incident, Stallone confirmed that it was his wish to encourage Lundgren to show his dominance.
As Stallone wanted the scenes to be more real, he asked Lundgren to give his best, which had him flown into intensive care from Canada to California. He also said that until after the cameras stopped rolling Stallone didn’t comprehend how badly his body was damaged.
As reported by The Detroit News, Stallone said,
“I didn’t feel it in the moment but, later that night, my heart started to swell, my blood pressure went up to 260 and I was going to be talking to angels. Next thing I know I’m on this emergency, low-altitude flight. I’m in intensive care surrounded by nuns.”
Stallone was hospitalized for four days after the injury. However, all of these troubles turned out to be fruitful as the movie went on to earn $300 million during its box office run.
