“Chris Rock waited an entire year to address the slap”: The View’s Joy Behar Claims Will Smith Deserves Being Humiliated Over Oscars Slap Jokes
The slap at the 94th Academy Awards has become one of the most memorable pop culture moments of 2022. And with Chris Rock’s recent Netflix special, people have once again started talking about the infamous incident. Joy Behar, the co-host of the ABC daytime talk show The View also joined the conversation during a recent episode of the show. The hosts of the talk show discussed The Slap and Chris Rock’s Selective Outrage toward Will Smith.
While discussing the Spiral star’s timing for his Netflix special, the hosts of the ABC talk show also shared some ideas for the 2023 Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel.
Joy Behar Discusses The Slap With The View Co-hosts
The View panel recently discussed the infamous 2022 Oscars incident again, where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The comedian fired back at the King Richard star and his wife during Netflix’s first live event, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.
While talking about Smith’s reaction during the latest episode, Joy Behar shared that the Oscar-winning actor is reportedly upset with Chris Rock’s latest stand-up. As she mentioned that the producers of the 2023 Oscars are planning to “make reference to The Slap in a humorous way,” Sunny Hostin shared her opinion as well. She said,
“I loved what Margaret Cho, our guest, said the other day. She said that Chris waited an entire year to address the slap, so it felt less retaliatory and more responsive.”
Hostin also shared that she does not think the incident should be pointed out at the 95th Academy Awards. “I don’t think they should lean into it, I think they shouldn’t mention it,” Hostin said. However, Joy Behar did not feel the same way and started suggesting ideas for ways to re-enact the incident at the 2023 Academy Awards.
Joy Behar Wants a Musical For the Slapgate
While discussing the incident and how Chris Rock made $40 million for his Netflix special, Sunny Hostin asked Joy Behar if she would make a joke about the incident as a comedian. The television host said that she would do so before calling the whole situation “a dream come true” for the host of the 2023 Oscars, Jimmy Kimmel.
She termed the incident as the “elephant in the room” for this year’s Oscars while stating that it has to be addressed. Behar seemed confident that the host would not be able to hold back from mentioning The Slap. She even suggested that the host “could do a musical number” to re-enact the infamous incident.
It would be the third time Kimmel will be hosting the award ceremony, and he reportedly plans to address the incident briefly in his monologue, before moving on with the ceremony.
Chris Rock: Selective Outrage is available to stream on Netflix.
The Oscars will be held Sunday, March 12, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
