The movie with a star-studded cast of Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh among others hit the theaters on the 21st of July, and its initial box office collection has been made to look a bit dim thanks to the outburst of Barbie Mania, which broke the $100m barrier on its opening weekend.

While early signs at the box office clearly point to Oppenheimer being left behind Barbie on the financial road, early reviews from fans and critics alike suggest the former is going to leave the latter behind in the race for awards.

Fans Are Already Predicting Oscar Nominations for Cillian Murphy‘s Oppenheimer

Nolan adopted various measures – from moving away from CGIs to writing script in first person – to bring the story of the father of the atomic bomb to the fore. But it was his actors that truly lifted and intensified the plot.

In particular, Cillian Murphy, who leaves fans stunned with his emotional performance during a climatic court scene, has yet again managed to do the trick for his Inception director. Robert Downey Jr. also deserves his flowers for fantastically portraying Lewis Strauss – the real-life nemesis of Oppenheimer.

Fans on social media have started to talk about how the two actors should get a shot at winning the Academy Award for their performance. Some fans appear to be bullish on this and believe both actors are already locked in for nominations.

One user backed the suggestion and also added Oppenheimer’s editor, Jennifer Lame deserves a mention for her best work to date.

A fan went as far as thanking Nolan for providing Downey Jr. the perfect stage to work his magic.

There’s little to argue against these suggestions, but we’d like to add that even the female cast, despite being afforded limited importance to the overall plot was impressive. Pugh, who played Oppenheimer’s love interest Jean Tatlock, and Emily Blunt, who co-starred as his wife were both very good.

Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer Faces Backlash in India

As mentioned above, Pugh played her part pretty well. However, one of her major scenes with Murphy from Oppenheimer hasn’t been received well in India.

Oppenheimer who consistently finds himself questioning the impact of his genius on mankind was really engrossed with the Hindu text Bhagavad Gita. However, during one of the scenes in the movie, he’s shown having s*x with Jean, who during intercourse asks him to read a text from the book. The words he reads were as follows (translated from Sanskrit): “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Oppenheimer’s words hold significance to the theme of the movie, but since Gita is a sacred text for Hindus, the situation during which it was read has irked some people in India.

Nolan would hope the Oscar-worthy acting of his cast manages to cover up the controversial scene and doesn’t impact Oppenheimer’s collection.
