Pop icon Taylor Swift is known for two things: catchy tunes and chronicling her love life in her music (mainly inspired by her past relationships). The pop queen isn’t shy about using her music to tell her side of the story. From Dear John to We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, her songs have become cultural touchstones for heartbreak and healing.

This openness about her personal life in her music made her super famous, but it also puts her exes in a tricky position. Imagine the pressure of being mentioned, (that too) not always in the most flattering light, in a song heard by millions. But have you ever wondered why the men she sings about rarely speak out? Legal expert Emma Gill stated a possible reason.

Legal Expert Claimed NDAs Keep Swift’s Exes Silent

Take a look at Taylor Swift‘s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department. Tracks reportedly reference past relationships with Joe Alwyn, Matty Healy, and even her current beau, Travis Kelce. Even though T-Swizzle shares a lot in her songs, the men themselves remain tight-lipped. This silence is particularly striking because some of her ex-boyfriends are pretty famous.

Entertainment lawyer Emma Gill has an answer for why it is so. She asserted that NDAs might be the reason behind the radio silence from the Lover singer’s former partners. The lawyer told Mail Online:

“Taylor Swift has settled a number of scores in song, yet cleverly ensured her ex-lovers rarely become liabilities. By definition, we’ll never really know what conditions are imposed by non-disclosure agreements – but you can find templates for ‘Relationship NDA’s’ online.”

These agreements basically stop someone from sharing private information. In relationships, this could mean keeping details about the romance, private talks, or even pictures secret. While the exact rules of the 34-year-old pop star’s NDAs are not known, Gill added that one can easily find standard “Relationship NDAs” online.

Taylor Swift’s Exes Stay Silent, Maybe to Honor Her Musical Expression

It’s important to note that NDAs might not be the only factor at play. Tay has said that she uses her music to talk about her feelings and past relationships. She told Glamour in 2012:

“I don’t talk about my personal life in great detail. I write about it in my songs, and I feel like you can share enough about your life in your music to let people know what you’re going through.”

Her exes’ silence could simply be a way to respect her artistic expression. Perhaps they choose not to engage in a public back-and-forth and let her music speak for itself.
