Daniel Radcliffe Traumatized His ‘Harry Potter’ Cast and Crew After Arriving on Set With a Black Eye as an 11-Year-Old
The Harry Potter franchise is one of the most popular fantasy franchises in the world. J. K. Rowling’s book series has culminated in various things, from movies and fanart to merchandise and whatnot. English actor Daniel Radcliffe rose to fame as a 12-year-old kid for his portrayal of the titular hero and continues to be known as the Boy Who Lived even after all these years. And always will be.
The Harry Potter book series was adapted into eight films between 2000 and 2010. With the cast and crew spending so much time together during the making of the films, they forged an ever-lasting bond with each other. There are so many stories that have come out of the sets of these films over the years. One of them is about how Daniel Radcliffe shocked the cast and crew by arriving with a black eye on the set.
Daniel Radcliffe’s Black Eye Shocked the Harry Potter Cast and Crew
Even as a young boy, the Kill Your Darlings star was so charming that everyone- audiences, cast, and crew- loved him. The Harry Potter film sets were one of those where the child actors were not exploited. So, child actors such as Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint would alternatively do four hours of shooting and three hours of school work.
And when they were not doing any of those? They did what children do best- be children. Recounting one of these incidents, Robbie Coltrane once told EW how they liked to get the make-up artists to paint gashes on them. Coltrane said:
“Daniel got one to give him a black eye, and he came in the morning and the other ones said, ‘OMIGOD! What happened?”
There are many other such stories where the child actors have done something just as hilarious while also giving enthralling performances.
Chris Columbus Was Enamoured with Daniel Radcliffe’s Performance
Although Potterheads need not be reminded of the story of Daniel Radcliffe‘s casting as Harry Potter, a quick brushup of the memory can never hurt. After more than half a year of searching for the perfect British boy for the role of the titular character, 11-year-old Radcliffe was discovered by producer David Heyman and writer Steve Kloves in a theatre where he was seated behind them. Later, his father informed him about the confirmation of his role when he was taking a bath.
Robbie Coltrane also told EW how director Chris Columbus was patient with the child actors and never lost his cool while dealing with them. Columbus also did not hold back his appreciation for the young Guns Akimbo star as he said:
“He holds the film together. He’s in almost every frame. Dan is an 11-year-old with a 35-year-old heart. There [is] so much depth, so much going on behind his eyes, you realize: This is a kid who has lived a life. This is a kid who can appear haunted and troubled by his past. Yet he’s charming. That kind of maturity is hard to find in an 11-year-old.”
The fact that Daniel Radcliffe had this kind of maturity even as young as he was was truly astonishing for the cast and crew members of the film. Over the years, he has continued to show this same level of maturity.
