“I was never the pretty girl…never the popular girl in class”: David Beckham’s Wife Victoria Beckham Shares Painful Details of Getting Bullied as a Teenager
English fashion designer and television personality Victoria Caroline Beckham OBE, wife of footballer David Beckham, revealed she was bullied at school for being ‘awkward‘ and didn’t have many friends during The BoF VOICES 2022 Podcast on Friday. Despite her dominance in fashion today, she wasn’t always that way. In the face of constant media scrutiny, the former Spice Girl talked about getting strength from criticism and staying focused and flexible.
The 48-year-old fashion designer, who has four children, Brooklyn, 23, Romeo, 20, Cruz, 17, and Harper, 11, with husband David Beckham, also discussed in 2019 how she used the painful experience of her past to teach her daughter the importance of being “kind” to each other as she grows up. The most recent podcast she appeared on also opened up about her famous wedding with her footballer husband twenty-three years ago.
Victoria Beckham Revealed She Was Bullied At School
During the podcast, the host praised the former Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham, for her confidence in how she carries herself as a young woman who aspires to be. A couple of questions later, the host asked the fashion designer if she believed that her personal journey from pop star to businesswoman and everything in between had been one of strategic planning.
Beckham revealed,
“I’ve always had to work really, really hard. Nothing ever came easy to me. When I was in school, I was never the most academic, I was never the pretty girl in class, I was never the popular girl in class… I mean was quite the opposite.”
The former Posh Spice added,
“I was bullied really badly at school and always really, really, struggled, which is why I always had to keep my head down, be tough, and work hard.”
Victoria Beckham has trademarked the words ‘Victoria Beckham’ and ‘VB‘ to protect her legal rights to sell beauty and wellness products internationally. Nevertheless, she came from a working-class family that she was very close to. While she has always been passionate about singing and dancing, she has not always been good at it. She already has an eponymous brand to complement her fashion label and an array of beauty products to offer.
Victoria Beckham Opened Up About Her Wedding With David Beckham
During The Business of Fashion’s BoF VOICES 2022 Podcast, the designer talked candidly about misconceptions surrounding her 1999 wedding to the 47-year-old former soccer player. She started,
“I think that the media glamorized the wedding much more than it actually was.”
She recalled,
“The ceremony was actually much more intimate than it looked.”
The designer added,
“I love to have fun. I work very, very hard. I take what I do very seriously. I want to be a great wife and a really great mum, but I wanna have fun as well. Sometimes my tongue-in-cheek sense of humor does tend to get me in trouble, but the wedding wasn’t as huge as everybody made it out [to be].”
According to her, the couple’s inner circle included Spice Girl members, David Beckham‘s soccer teammates, and their friends and family members.
She admitted,
“I don’t think I realized when I met David quite what the two of us together would be.”
“When you took David to Manchester United, and then you took me in the Spice Girls, it was huge. I mean, everywhere that we went, we were followed by fans and paparazzi and constantly being talked about.”
The couple’s nuptials made headlines, but so did many other aspects of their lives, and it was that attention, combined with their industry talent, that made them one of Hollywood’s most powerful couples. The couple celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary with a heartfelt Instagram post this past July, and they are still in love after over two decades.
