Denis Villeneuve isn’t Rushing to Make Dune 3 Due to “The danger in Hollywood”
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2 is fast approaching with Timothée Chalamet returning as Paul, along with newcomers like Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. Since the film will feature the novel’s events by Frank Herbert, the director shed light on the next installment.
If you’re wondering about Dune 3 coming anytime soon, then make sure to know that Denis Villeneuve has no plans to rush the third film. The director emphasized investing proper time in crafting the next film, and won’t be following the current trend of only focusing on release dates.
Denis Villeneuve’s Plan For Dune 3: Won’t Be Rushing The Next Installment
Similar to many acclaimed directors of Hollywood, Denis Villeneuve also believes in quality over quantity. While the director and Dune 2 cast members are already busy promoting the second installment of Dune, the filmmaker also shared his views on Dune 3. Villeneuve explained that despite the trend of focusing majorly on release dates of films, he won’t rush the third installment.
During his interview with The Times, Denis Villeneuve shared his desire for Dune 3 and said:
“There is absolutely a desire to have a third one, but I don’t want to rush it. The danger in Hollywood is that people get excited and only think about release dates, not quality.”
The Blade Runner 2049 maker understands the danger in Hollywood, which is focusing on release dates rather than the quality of the film. Rushing Dune 3 will likely diminish the quality and excitement among fans. Villeneuve also believes that the true power of a film lies in enhanced visuals and sound effects, for which the director would need to invest proper time.
Denis Villeneuve stated that he completely dislikes dialogues in films, explaining another trend of focusing more on impactful lines and ignoring how the visuals and sound effects of the movie can engage fans. The Enemy creator even expressed a desire to make a film that has no dialogue and still captivates fans through the way it is represented.
Denis Villeneuve Defends Runtime of Dune 2: Says The Youth Prefers Longer Movies
Another notable trend that Denis Villeneuve discussed was the runtime of Dune 2, which is around 2 hours 46 minutes. There is an ongoing debate that films are now being made for longer durations, compared to the normal runtime.
However, the Prisoners maker defended the runtime of Dune 2 and explained that the youth crave good quality and meaningful content, rather than abrupt endings. In the same interview, Denis Villeneuve said he trusts the audience, and making a film adapted from Frank Herbert’s novel indeed requires time. The director added:
“This was the only way I could succeed… Also, think of Oppenheimer. It is a three-hour, rated-R movie about nuclear physics that is mostly talking. But the public was young – that was the movie of the year by far for my kids.”
Villeneuve talked about Christopher Nolan‘s last year summer blockbuster, which ran for three hours and broke numerous records. He added:
“There is a trend. The youth love to watch long movies because if they pay, they want to see something substantial.”
According to Denis Villeneuve, the trend of making longer movies has no negative impact on the entertainment world, in fact, this is what the new audience pays for.
Dune 2 will come out on March 1, 2024.
