The Dune series is considered one of the biggest and most successful epic science fiction movies directed by Denis Villeneuve. Based on one of the world’s best-selling science fiction novels of the same name by Frank Herbert, the story centers around the character of Paul Atreides from House Arrakis, played by Timothée Chalamet. The setting of the story is in the distant future in a feudal interstellar society.

Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune was the third adaptation of the novel, after filmmaker David Lynch’s 1984 movie and a miniseries that premiered in 2000 by John Harrison. Upon its release, both Dune: Part 1 and Dune: Part 2 performed exceptionally well at the box office, receiving great reviews from the audience and critics. While fans wait for the third part, musical genius Hans Zimmer shared one little detail about the upcoming part.

Hans Zimmer reveals how Denis Villeneuve thought of the music in Dune: Messiah

Following the success of Dune: Part 2, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve revealed that the third part of the popular franchise will be the adaptation of Dune Messiah. It is the second book in Frank Herbet’s Dune series of six novels and the sequel to the original Dune. ScreenRant reports that the ending of Part 2 swiftly sets up the characters to pick up in the third movie.

Dune: Messiah is going to explore Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides’ story as the Emperor of the Universe and his challenges with the power he holds. The movie is said to be in the early stages of development. One of the things that fans and critics pointed out in Dune movies was the incredible music that simply made everything on-screen look perfect. Hans Zimmer is the man behind the legendary music, and he has shared that he is already working on the music for the upcoming part.

Interestingly, Hans Zimmer, in his interview with Wallpaper.com, revealed how the filmmaker had thought of the music in the third part and one significant element that the audience will get to see.

Denis said that three nights ago, he had a dream about the music in the third movie. I don’t know if it’s like the dreams of Chalamet’s character, Paul Atreides, or if his vision will come true or not. But apparently, there’s going to be a lot of bagpipes in the next movie.

He had also shared that he could not stop writing and had already shared a ten-minute piece with Villeneuve for the third part, which he liked. The brilliant Zimmer studied the production, the costume design, and how cinematographer Grieg Fraser was going to shoot the movie, along with learning the palette to tell the story via his music.

Dune: Messiah to be the last Dune movie for Denis Villeneuve?

Frank Herbert wrote six novels in his Dune series, and Denis Villeneuve had been more than interested in adapting the stories for the big screen. But in his interview with Time Magazine earlier this year, the filmmaker shared,

Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me. It’s being written right now. The screenplay is almost finished, but it is not finished. It will take a little time. There’s a dream of making a third movie. It would make absolute sense to me.

Timothée Chalamet also shared with Total Film Magazine that the idea of the third part excites him very much, and if given the time and opportunity to bring the whole story to a circle, he’d be enthusiastic about it. Actress Zendaya, who plays Chani in the movie, was also asked by Fandango (via Variety) if she’d like to return for the third part of the series. To which she said,

Would we be down? I mean, of course. Any time Denis calls, it’s a yes from me. I’m excited to see what happens. I started reading Messiah, and I was like, ‘Woah, I’m only shooting the first movie. Let me just go back to the first one. It’s so much to take in, but there are no better hands with better care and love for it than Denis.

It’s very early to say anything about the development of the movie, but one thing is sure: it’s going to be an epic saga.

Dune: Part 2 is available to stream on HBO Max.
