Despite All the Hatred, ‘Fast X’ Still 5th Highest Grossing Movie of 2023, Ranks Above Across the Spider-Verse, Mission Impossible 7
The Fast franchise again proves family is more than physics. Despite the criticism and waning attention, this summer witnessed Vin Diesel and family surge ahead, leaving Tom Cruise and his crew trailing in their wake, making Fast X the fifth-highest-grossing movie of 2023 so far, where Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse becoming the sixth position.
Fast X speeds to $705M tops Summer Box Office
The Fast and Furious franchise’s latest installment, Fast X, is making a memorable move by pulling off various blockbusters, grossing $705 million worldwide. Variety reports that Fast X brought in $148 million domestically. According to Deadline, the action flick has earned over $588 million overseas, meaning Fast X has cleared the half-billion dollar milestone, grabbing the fifth position in Hollywood summer releases, surpassing recent hits like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part.
As far as we perceive, no other action franchise captures the wild and insane car adventure vibe quite like Fast and Furious. Since its inception in 2001 as a normal action adventure, the movie has unexpectedly grown into an epic, spanning more than 10 films. The film series has become known for its high-octane action and has become one of the most popular franchises worldwide.
Fast X audience appeals prevail over its shallow plot
Though recently the franchise has experienced a diminishing appeal due to its shallow narrative, illogical feats, and homage to family, it is clear that audiences are not watching Fast movies for the plot, which is quite proven by the reception rate of Fast X. Directed by Louise Leterrier, Fast X follows Vin Diesel’s street racer, Dom Toretto, and his crew as they clash with one of the most vicious opponents, Dante Reyes, they have ever faced. Reyes, portrayed by Aquaman actor Jason Mamoa, is out for vengeance for the loss of his family’s fortune from a prior heist in Rio de Janeiro.
The ensemble cast includes prominent faces like Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, and Charlize Theron.

Therefore, Fast X making the top 5-grossing movies of 2023 so far, behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with $845.4 million. While Oppenheimer overtakes Fast X, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing movie, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie maintain the top spot, crossing $1 billion. Veteran actor Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible managed to make half a billion dollars.
While superhero movies usually reign at the global box office, like Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy have proven their mettle, Marvel’s Ant-Man crushes its feet to make the lowest profit. Similarly, DCEU’s Flash and Shazam: Fury of the Gods ended in full-on disaster, grossing no more than $300 million. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was meant to serve as a triumphant goodbye to the archaeologist-adventurer but only managed to earn $375 million, the lowest-ever Indianapolis box office profit.
