Margot Robbie revealed she surprised Brad Pitt with an unscripted kiss
During an interview with E! News in 2022, actress Margot Robbie, who is married to Harry Potter actor Tom Ackerley, revealed that her kiss with Brad Pitt in the movie Babylon was improvised. She said,
“That wasn’t in the script, but I thought, ‘When else am I gonna get the chance to kiss Brad Pitt? I’m just going to go for it. I said, ‘Damien, I think Nellie would just go up and kiss Jack. And Damien was like, ‘Well, she could—wait, hold on. You just wanna kiss Brad Pitt.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, so sue me. This opportunity might never come up again.’ And he was like, ‘It does work for the character,’ and I was like, ‘I think so.'”
The actress stars as an aspiring actress Nellie in the movie who looks forward to making it big in the industry with the help of aspiring actor Manny Torres played by Diego Calva and veteran actor Jack Conrad played by Brad Pitt.
Robbie, who recently appeared in Barbie, had revealed at the time that she was happy about the kiss adding that she also kissed Katherine Waterston but she was not sure if that made it to the cut.
Brad Pitt reacts to the unscripted kiss with Margot Robbie
Brad Pitt, who starred as Jack Conrad in Babylon, had no idea about the kiss that was about to happen during the filming and after Robbie’s revelation, a lot of fans expressed their disappointment with how the actress behaved. Brad Pitt finally addressed the situation during an interview with ET’s Kevin Frazier at the premiere in Los Angeles. The actor was asked if the actress had been taking a little creative liberty to include an unscripted kiss with him, to which he said,
“No, not necessarily. There’s always room for character interpretation. Believe me, that’s the tamest thing she does in this. She’s on fire about this. It’s the best I’ve ever seen her.”
Earlier, during an interview with ET, Robbie had described working with Pitt as a brilliant experience. She said,
“It’s technically the third film we’ve appeared in together, and we’ve never acted together until this film. So that was a wonderful gift…. He’s so, so wonderful. Watching Brad Pitt, the biggest movie star, play the biggest movie star is just something like, inherently fun.”
Pitt, on his part, shared, “I mean, there’s some good drama in this one. It’s really fun and it’s big. It makes me really proud to be part of this lineage of getting to contribute to storytelling in my little form. And all the people who have come before us and all that’ll come after.”
Margot Robbie reacted to the backlash of her unscripted kiss with Brad Pitt
When Robbie revealed that she snuck into an unscripted kiss with her co-star thinking that she might never get the opportunity again, she received massive backlash from the fans who thought it was odd for Robbie to do that, especially considering that Angelina Jolie had accused the actor of alleged physical and emotional abuse.
In her interview with ET, Robbie clarified about her comment on the kiss and said,
“We all established our boundaries before making this movie because it’s a movie that really pushes boundaries in a lot of ways. We’re all good.”
During the same interview, she was asked about how she feels about Lady Gaga now playing Harley Quinn, a character Robbie had played. She said that she is going to do an amazing job and she is very excited to see Gaga as Quinn. She added,
“It’s all I could’ve ever hoped for Harley was that she would become one of those characters, kinda like Batman or Hamlet, that gets handed from actor to actor, everyone gets a go at playing them.” So for Lady Gaga to take up the role means that people want to see her in multiple iterations.
