The rise in popularity of streaming services has evolved the entertainment industry in ways that have changed things massively for both fans and actors.

Hollywood is facing an industry-wide shutdown after Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) joined screenwriters to protest against the dwindling share of profits. Around 65,000 actors are supporting the strike which is demanding a fairer share of revenue that big studios generate on the back of their talent and hard work.

Earlier, actors, directors, and other shareholders behind popular shows and movies used to get significant compensation from future avenues, including reruns and DVD releases. And their impact isn’t just limited to residuals, as the streaming era has also influenced the way viewers consume their content.

The new generation of entertainment content consumers continues to get drowned in the habit of enjoying their favorite shows and movies online.

As a result, the old-school trend of buying and renting DVDs and Blu-rays, to not just watch but also show off and expand specific collections, is being left behind.

The lack of demand for and sales of physical copies is starting to change the plans of studios like Walt Disney, who are instead attracting an ever-increasing number of eyeballs on their streaming platforms (Disney+).

It’s understood Disney will stop releasing DVDs and Blu-rays of their future projects in Australia – the world’s 13th largest economy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last opportunity for fans Down Under to add to their Disney collection that is bound to soon become a thing of the past considering recent trends.

James Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 – which follows the final adventure of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) -led team of misfits theaters on May 5.

The movie was received pretty well by the fans and has collected over $850 million at the box office worldwide, cementing itself as one of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest hits.

Fans in the U.S. who missed the movie in theaters or prefer to watch from the comfort of their home can catch Peter Quill and his gang saving the universe from yet another foe, on August 2 on Disney+.

While we wait for the viewing figures of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 on Disney+, one thing has been made perfectly clear with the movie’s theatrical success (along with Barbie and Oppenheimer) that fans might not enjoy buying DVDs but they are still more than happy to queue up to buy tickets to watch their stars on big screens.
