Disney’s Coco Gave Away One of Toy Story’s Darkest Secrets About the Death of an Iconic Villain
Coco and the Toy Story movie series happen to be two of the best-animated movies to have been ever made. The Toy Story movies are mostly focused on the friendship between the characters Woody and Buzz Lightyear, and also their bonding with Andy and Bonnie. However, there is a very dark theory about a villain in the movie that fans may have missed in Coco.
Although the Toy Story movies seem disconnected from the rest of the Pixar Universe, that may not be entirely the case if the Easter egg in Coco is considered legitimate. Not all Easter eggs and theories are supposed to be taken seriously, but some simply can’t be disregarded. According to this dark theory, Toy Story villain Sid may have died after that movie.
The Toy Story Reference in Coco May Not Be Just for Fun
As far as fan theories are concerned, there is no shortage of those for any form of media whether it is live-action movies, animated movies, music, books, and nearly everything else. The thing about Pixar is that it likes to use Easter eggs and drop references here and there in every new movie just for the fun of it, but things might have gotten a little dark with this particular Toy Story reference in Coco.
Sid Phillips, the original antagonist of the Toy Story movie series, is known for his signature black shirt with a white skull logo printed on it. In Coco, a character wearing that exact same shirt with a little bit of Spanish touch to the skull logo is seen in the Land of the Dead. However, it does not confirm Sid’s death in the movie.

This scene in Coco is part of the sequence wherein the protagonist Miguel and the homeless skeleton Hectór participate in a talent competition so that they can earn an invite to Ernesto de la Cruz’s Day of the Dead party. Among the other participants from the Land of the Dead, there is also one wearing Sid’s shirt teamed up with glasses and a different hairstyle.
Coco Fan Theory Takes This as Confirmation About Sid Phillips’ Death in Toy Story
The concept of the Land of the Dead in Coco comes from the Mexican holiday called the Day of the Dead. According to the movie, the Land of the Dead is the place where a person who has died in the real world goes which implies that it is the location of the spirits of the human beings who have passed away.

The fact that a skeleton in the Land of the Dead was wearing Sid’s signature t-shirt instead of a human being in the real world confirms Sid’s death for fans of both movies. If Toy Story‘s actual timeline is considered, Sid’s changed appearance could be due to his older age depending on his time of death because there is no other information provided about it in Coco, which features some other subtle Toy Story references too.
