Sandra Bullock’s relationship with her ex-husband Jesse James did not start like most Hollywood couples. For Christmas 2003, Bullock took her motorcycle-loving godson to West Coast Choppers. There she met James, who was the tattooed bad boy of reality TV.

At first, Bullock wasn’t interested. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed how she tried to avoid James after he tried to call her for the first time. She said to one of her employees,

I said, ‘Do not give the man my number-give him my e-mail. I’ll politely say, No, I’m not in a place ..’

But James was persistent. To Bullock’s surprise, he challenged her to a game of 20 Questions via email, and none of his questions had anything to do with motorcycles. Bullock told Vanity Fair, “Through a courtship of letters, which I didn’t even recognize, I learned about a human being.”

Their romance picked pace, and the couple got married in July 2005, which was a very private affair. Fans thought it was Bullock’s 41st birthday celebration instead of the wedding. However, they loved the unlikely pairing. Bullock also took on the role of a stepmother to James’ three children, which he had from previous relationships.

Their relationship reached new heights at the 2010 Oscars. Bullock won the Best Actress for the movie The Blind Side and James was very emotional about her achievement.

However, their fairy tale ended just ten days after the Oscars. In Touch magazine (via Daily Mail) came out with the story that James cheated on his wife and had been having an affair with the tattoo artist Michelle ‘Bombshell’ McGee for 11 months while Bullock was busy with shooting.

A few weeks later, more women reported having sexual relationships with James after he married Bullock. Although James apologized to the actress in his interview with People, their dream marriage had become a nightmare by then already.

The Aftermath of Heartbreak and Moving On

After the scandal occurred, James went to rehab for his s*x addiction treatment (as per ABC News). On the other hand, Bullock filed for divorce. However, there was some sort of consolation for her after she adopted a baby boy named Louis in January 2010.

James talked about his affair during an interview on Nightline in 2010. He claimed that he knew he would get caught eventually, saying (via The Sun),

I was unfaithful to my wife and I’m not going to put any kind of count to it. Just the fact that I took a perfect marriage and a perfect wife and step-mother and threw it away because of my actions, it doesn’t matter . . . it could’ve been a million (women). Bad is bad, no matter what it is.

But James told a somewhat different story in his memoir. He told The Daily Beast,

I’m a beer drinker/biker/don’t have a problem punching someone, but all that ended. I couldn’t do anything to bring any kind of embarrassment. It was a very controlled way of living, and I don’t think it was very healthy.

Bullock has never been quite vocal regarding the incident. She focused on her children and career and proved strong in front of a public breakup. In a 2013 Vogue interview, she said, “I am exactly where I want to be now. You can’t go backward. I’m not going backward.”

Bullock and James went on with their lives. The actress got back into a relationship with photographer Bryan Randall in 2015. Unfortunately, Randall died in August 2023 of ALS. On the other hand, James tied the knot two more times since Bullock left him, but his infidelity allegations remained constant.
