Dwayne Johnson Urging Fans to Sing in Theatres During Musicals Isn’t as Bad an Idea as It Seems For 1 Sole Reason
- Dwayne Johnson is on-board with movie-goers singing along the characters in Moana 2 in cinemas.
- Special screening just for fans to sing-along can work for both concert and musical movies.
- The actor says it was very cool for him to be able to work with his daughters who voice two characters in the movie.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, Moana 2, starring Dwayne Johnson, Auli’I Cravalho, Temuera Morrison, and more, is an animated musical adventure movie. A sequel to 2016’s Moana, the story picks up three years after the events of the first movie as Moana receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors.
Teaming up with her friends and demigod Maui, the two of them journey to Oceania to break the god Nalo’s curse on the hidden island of Motufetu. The movie had its world premiere at Kapolei, Hawaii recently, and is all set to premiere on November 27, 2024, worldwide. Ahead of the release, Dwayne Johnson has shared a very interesting idea for the viewers who’d make their way to theaters to watch the movie.
Moana 2 actor Dwayne Johnson insists fans ‘sing-along’ during musicals
In his recent interview with BBC News, at the premiere of his upcoming animated musical adventure movie Moana 2, Dwayne Johnson shared his view on audience singing during the musicals in the theaters. The actor plays Maui in the movie and mentioned,
Johnson’s view came after the debate on social media that stems from the release of Ariana Grande’s starrer Wicked, whether people should be singing along with the characters on-screen or not while in theaters. While some mentioned that everyone is allowed to express their happiness the way they want, some argued that it kind of ruins other people’s excitement.
However, an X user noted that instead of singing in theatres and ruining other people’s excitement, the theatres can have sing-along screenings for the movie where the audience can just simply enjoy themselves by singing along with the characters. Other users also seemed to be on board with musical movies having designated shows for the fans who’d want to sing in theaters.
It’s very similar to something that happened during the Eras Tour Concert Movie, and Taylor Swift took to her social media to write, ‘Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing, and dancing are encouraged‘. AMC Theatres had shared at the time that they indeed encourage dancing and singing throughout the concert movie.
And now Variety reported that Wicked is setting up sing-along screens for Christmas. According to AMC, moviegoers aren’t allowed to sing along to the Wicked songs at any point so they’re going to have special sing-along screenings. It should be known that the sing-along shows can work very well with both concerts and musical movies as it’s going to allow the ardent fans to enjoy themselves to their fullest.
Dwayne Johnson gets candid about working with his daughters in Moana 2
The professional wrestler-turned-actor, in his conversation with PA Media, shared that the sequel movie has helped him get closer to his culture. He shared that every day is a learning lesson for culture, regardless of how much one thinks that they know about their culture.
He shared with E! News that since the release of the original movie in 2016, the franchise has managed to bring awareness to many traditions of the Pacific Island. Johnson explained that he feels that one gets lucky every once in a while, and when someone tries to make a movie that pierces culture a little bit, the songs in the movie become anthemic and iconic; it’s awesome.
Dwayne Johnson also mentioned his experience of working with his daughters Jasmine and Tiana, who got to voice two members of the Moana-be’s fan club. He shared with the publication,
Johnson added that the main thing about Moana is the idea of female empowerment and the idea that they’d always say, ‘What’s it like being on the reef and looking beyond the reef?’ He shared with ET that he is very excited for the audience to see the movie, the technology they have used, the effects, and the cutting edge.
Dwayne Johnson noted that they all went for it, pointing out that they believed that if they were going to make a sequel to something so beloved as Moana, they would rather go all in for it.
