Emma Stone Co-Star to Sue Studio Over a ‘Life Changing Injury’ on the Movie Set: “How can they deny responsibility”
In Hollywood, this seems the season of speaking up against media corporations. The strikes have caused several stories to surface. Actors, writers, and artists have been sharing their bits of the unjust and exploiting experiences they are put through by multimedia conglomerates of the entertainment industry. One such report has come from the Emma Stone starrer 2021 Disney drama Cruella. One of the extras on set has filed a complaint against Disney Co. for something that changed her life irrevocably.
What Actually Happened?

While the shooting of Cruella, one of the extras had an accident on set due to a wardrobe malfunction. She fell and screamed in pain. But the Disney employees told her that despite being barely able to walk, she’ll have to make it to the hospital by herself. If it were not for a studio staff member giving her a ride to the hospital in their minibus, her condition would have gotten much worse. The actress displaced her kneecap. Even after having gone through surgery and intense treatment her leg has been harmed, scarred, and changed for life.
And yet, Disney denies all allegations stating there is no footage of the incident.
Disney’s Irresponsibility Changed Joanne Tremain’s Life Changed For The Worst

When now thirty-two years old Joanne Tremain stepped on the set for Disney’s Cruella for her small role as an extra in 2019, she felt a step closer to her lifelong dream to be an actress. She had gotten to the Shepperton Studios in Surrey, where she was to shoot a ballroom scene with lead actress Emma Stone. She was made to wear heeled shoes which were too big a size for her. There was some drink spilled on the floor, causing her to slip. After long-term treatment, Tremain recovered from the injuries.
Joanne Tremain has now pressed charges against Disney, for their lack of awareness and basic human decency has caused her too much pain. Recounting the incident Tremain says:
“My kneecap was on the side of my leg but when somebody straightened my leg it came back into place, and I screamed even more.“

Disney denies Tremain’s all claims, to which she says:
“How can they deny responsibility and claim there is no footage of the incident? This has changed my life as I have had four knee dislocations and reconstructive surgery and I can’t stand for long periods, or my leg swells up. I have trouble bending and a numb lower leg which I’m told may never go. I was just starting out on my acting career and though I want to continue this incident could have ended it.”

Such a story of cruelty and unkindness making headlines is not completely shocking. Disney has a reputation for workplace exploitation. Multiple current and former, famous and former Disney Co. employees have stepped forward and shared their experiences of being severely overworked and underpaid. Disney has a history of not treating their lower and/or entry-level employees humanely.
But as Joanne Tremain has spoken up, there is hope that she gets justice. It will surely be interesting to note where this case goes from here.
