Quentin Tarantino, the legendary director, is also a true cinephile. He loves watching movies almost as much as he loves making them. By saying this, we mean that he watches movies of all genres, with a few exceptions here and there. Whether it is a thriller or a romance, you name it, he has watched it. A true cinephile right there!

Despite being a huge movie buff, Quentin Tarantino skipped watching a major James Bond movie. Shocking, isn’t it? Although he is a great director, not everything he has been associated with at some point has come to fruition. So, the pride that he has as a director has him turn his back on the James Bond movie Casino Royale. Hang on to find out his reasoning for doing so.

Quentin Tarantino on Why He Hasn’t Watched Casino Royale

If it were some other person, it would not be as much of a big deal that they have not watched Casino Royale. However, since it is Quentin Tarantino, one of the best directors in Hollywood, it is a big deal. The thing is that he was once in talks of making the movie, but never got the chance to do it. Hence, the aversion towards watching it when it was released years later.

Speaking to Movies.ie for an interview, Tarantino said:

“I don’t think I ever came close to it; I don’t think they ever considered me. I never saw the movie because I felt kind of raw about it. I could never really imagine doing it with the Broccolis [Bond producers] for the simple fact that they are never going to give me control. They could read the script I write and let me do it, but they were never going to give me final-cut control.”

The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood director went on to say that he was not sure that it would ever even work out because the producers would be way too nervous about it. However, this was not all that made him turn his nose up on the film.

It was after the success of Pulp Fiction that Quentin Tarantino tried to buy the rights to Casino Royale. This was until they found out that the Broccolis were associated with it. That was what blew off the deal for the Django Unchained director.

That being said, there were two reasons for his annoyance: one, they never even talked to him, and two, they should have been grateful to him because the movie would have never happened if he wasn’t associated with it at some point. He told Movies.ie:

“They went on record saying it was unfilmable and when I started talking about the idea, which I hoped would provoke a meeting, then suddenly the internet was filled with ‘That is what the Bond fans want to see,’. I created a demand for that that did not exist whatsoever before.”

Tarantino was hoping that at least the director would give him a ring to express his gratefulness. As it turns out, that did not happen. So, this justifies his refusal to watch the movie (considering he still hasn’t watched it).
