Greta Gerwig was actually thrilled to experience the initial reception of her movie Barbie. Despite the movie becoming the major hit of the year, Gerwig admitted that she sometimes felt doubtful in terms of creative choices. One of which is the I’m Just Ken song, featuring all the Kens fighting around the beach.

According to Hollywood Reporter, speaking at a special screen talk at the BFI London Film Festival, where she received a massive welcome, Gerwig said,

“That sequence, in particular, was just filled with choices that thrilled me and made me so happy, but then I’d be driving home at the end of the day and thinking… ‘Oh no!’”

Gerwig further added that there was even a big meeting to decide whether the song would be included in the film. Gerwig, who has dedicated her life to the movie, defended the inclusion of “Everything in Me Needs,”, highlighting her strong belief in the significance of the scene to the overall story.

“It’s like this incredible sense of ‘the song that it’s in my heart is in other people’s hearts, It’s been incredibly moving.”

The song I’m Just Ken, sung by Ryan Gosling, captures the inner conflicts and emotional depth of all Kens that live in Barbie Land, proving the importance of being themselves in the world even without Barbie.

During the BFI special screening, the 40-year-old director expressed her “most joyful experience” and recalled that she was so curious to get the initial reaction from the audience which made her snoop inside theaters. She mentioned,

“I went around to different theaters and sort of stood in the back and would then also turn the volume up if I felt it wasn’t playing at the perfect level. So I thought, if I can make a movie that is half as fun to watch as it was to make, I think maybe we’ve got a shot.”
