Godzilla Minus One Director Finally Confirms What Fans Had Long Been Suspecting About Noriko and It Means She Could Be the True Savior of Humanity
Godzilla Minus One is a 2023 Japanese kaiju film directed by Takashi Yamazaki. It’s the 37th entry in the Godzilla franchise and part of the franchise’s Reiwa era. The film premiered in Japan on November 3, 2023 to celebrate the franchise’s 70th anniversary. The film was a critical success, becoming one of the top three highest-grossing Japanese films of 2023. Set in Japan after World War II, it shows the country still recovering from the devastation of the war.
The story centers around Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a war veteran who feels he owes a debt after surviving the war. After the war, Kōichi started a family. He met Noriko Oishi (Minami Hamabe), and together they became parents to an orphaned child named Akiko (Sae Nagatani). Then, a giant monster (Godzilla) emerges and threatens Japan.
Godzilla Minus One ends with a big hint about the Godzilla’s return. However, what intrigued fans is the unexpected mark on Noriko’s Neck.
What’s the Mystery Behind Noriko’s Black Mark on Her Neck in Godzilla Minus One?
In Godzilla Minus One, Noriko Oishi is initially presumed dead after Godzilla’s attack on Tokyo. This pushes Kōichi to want to take down the monster even more. But, near the end of the movie (after Godzilla is defeated), viewers are surprised to discover that Noriko has survived. Kōichi and Akiko rush to the hospital where Noriko is being treated, and the family is joyfully reunited. Viewers are left with hints that there might be more to Noriko’s story when a piece of Godzilla’s flesh is seen mutating underwater.
More than that, a black mark on Noriko’s neck is briefly shown at the hospital, but no explanation is given for it. However, the film’s director recently confirmed a detail about the mark that seems coherent.
Director Confirms Fans’ Suspicions About Noriko’s Neck
Fans with sharp eyes spotted something strange on Noriko’s neck while watching Godzilla Minus One. Turns out, it’s not just a regular scar—it has cells from Godzilla in it! And guess what? Director Takashi Yamazaki himself confirmed it. At the Godzilla Fest Osaka held three days ago on 28th April, the director was asked, “Is the black birthmark on Minami Hamabe’s neck a Godzilla cell?” To this, he replied (via Sponichi), “Yes.”
According a fan, it seems like Noriko’s survival and the mark on her neck might set her up to become the only person who can talk to Godzilla with her mind. This means she’s like the middleman between humans and Godzilla, which could be a big deal since Godzilla seems to be on track to becoming a hero for humanity.
Iirc that’s been used canonically once where she will now be the only person who can telepathically communicate with Godzillla and so she’s the connection between Humans and Godzilla before he becomes their “savior”

It’s not the first time Godzilla has gone from being a threat to being a hero. In other movies, he’s fought off aliens and other monsters to protect humans. So if Noriko can tap into that connection, it could mean having a powerful ally on humanity’s side.
Her connection could go beyond simple communication. Maybe those cells let Noriko feel what Godzilla feels, or share in his experiences. That could lead to a real bond between them, based on trust and understanding. It wouldn’t be about controlling Godzilla, but working together with him for the greater good.
